Manchester United news: Pep Guardiola casts doubt over Bastian Schweinsteiger's fitness

Bayern Munich manager Guardiola has questioned the fitness of Man Utd's midfielder and also heaped praise on prospective signing Pedro

Manchester United signing Bastian Schweinsteiger’s fitness has been cast into doubt by his former Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola.

Schweinsteiger joined United for £15million this summer, having spent his entire career at Bayern, but the number of Bundesliga games he started gradually declined in each of the past three seasons.

Guardiola revealed 31-year-old Schweinsteiger has not been fully fit for the past three years, claiming the German will only be a big success at United if he can shake off his injury problems.

Schweinsteiger has been plagued by ankle and knee injuries, and Guardiola said: “When he does not have injury problems, I am completely convinced he will do very well at Manchester United. He is a top, top player.

“Unfortunately, during the last three years he was never in good condition. He is going to play really good there (at United). I really hope that is going to happen.”

Guardiola, though, gave a more encouraging assessment of the player United will be signing if, as expected, they complete a move for Barcelona forward Pedro.“He is one of the best players you can imagine,” said Guardiola, who managed Pedro at Barca.

“He's won the European Cup, the Champions League and played millions of games for Barcelona. He can play in any team in the world, but I don’t know the situation right now. He’s a great player.”

Guardiola’s Bayern contract is entering its final year and the Spaniard has been heavily linked with taking the Manchester City job next summer.

Asked about what will happen over his Bayern future, Guardiola responded: “I don’t know.” When he was pushed over whether he will manage in England, he added: “I am not going to talk about that.”

Bayern are hosting the Audi Cup this week, in which the German club, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur are competing.

Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez arrived in Munich without Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, who he claimed are both carrying knocks.

Arsenal are interested in signing Benzema, but Benitez said: “I think he will stay with us. I don’t see any problem. He trains really well and I am pleased with him.”

Benitez also insisted United target Gareth Bale is very much part of his plans, saying: “Obviously, Gareth is a key player for us. I don’t talk about offers or what could happen. I am talking about the commitment I am seeing from him every day. We have trained today and we were talking about his movements and what he could do for us.”

I really hope they don't sign Pedro, I think he could be their Alexei Sanchez. I wish we'd gone in for him.

Front three of Pedro - Benteke - Firmino with Coutinho pulling the strings alongside Henderson and Milner.

He's nowhere near as good as Sanchez is. Rolls around on the floor about the same amount though. Both cunts.

Regardless, he could be their creative spark, someone that makes things happen by taking risks and being a cunt.

Why's he only £20m? Near the end of his contract or on mega wages?

Pedro is a lightweight, diving, cunt. He will fit in well at the scum

Pedro is a good player, might have done alright with us under a progressive (i.e. attacking) manager like Rodgers. Can't see him displacing the 'hard working' Young under a more pragmatic manager like LvG.

Like Assassin says, he's bit too lightweight for LvG's liking. De ja Maria all over again.

My UTD friends are furious over rafael leaving, especially after listening to them over the past week say hes going to be a huge player for this this season etcetc... They're also calling Di Maria every name under the sun. I'm enjoying it.

Lets see them go through the season we just had, lose your best player(s) - De Gea and Di Maria (still a class player), and replace them with big money somebody or anothers that might or might not work out. Everyone around you strengthens while you have glaring weaknesses all round the pitch (Scheiderlin is as injury prone as Carrick).

And you now have CL to contend with. Good luck.

Fanciful thinking I'm afraid. Losing De Gea (if they actually do) and Di Maria is no comparison to us losing Suarez and having Sturridge injured all season. Not even close.

There's plenty of question marks about their squad still but there's no doubt in my mind they should still finish above us fairly easily.

If you ask neutrals, I think most of them would predict the Mancs to finish above us, but if their signings dont settle and ours does decently well, I think we have a good shot at finishing above them.

The scummers could be in the kack goalkeeper wise. De Gea possibly off to Rafa Madrid, Valdes banished to one of the lower teams and looking to get out. Now Loony Van Gaal has told Lindegaard he can leave on a free tranny. Happy days

Would love it if this happened but just can't see it.
