So you're all in agreement that you'd be happy with the punishment if Gerrard or Suarez had said the same thing, and therefore you all believe that Fowler should've been sacked for bending over continuously in front of Le Saux?

What else do you think it's getting at? There are plausible alternatives, but there are many 'jokes' in this vain and they all stem from the idea that homosexuals are a perverse threat.
I agree with Kenneth assessment, taking that comment to mean that all gay men are rapists is a bit sensational.

i wouldn't be happy with it, but if it were a clear cut case i also wouldn't have much of an argument about it. if i thought for one second that suarez was a racist ******* who had knowingly abused evra for example yes i'd be in favour of sacking him. no place for that at our club. i was also deeply embarrassed by the fowler situation.

its a retarded comment by an idiot trying to prove his heterosexual status that he's so straight he feels he needs to keep ass covered. I don't think he was implying in anyway that Thomas or any other gay guy is a rapist, just that his ass is off limits

The guy is obviously thick and the club should've had a word, but taking someones livelyhood away for that comment is crazy.

no way. that's what someone with no real sympathy for the gay community would say. i'm sure he tells himself that, but it's cognitive dissonance. absolutely no different than saying he would have to watch his wallet with all these black people around. it's a horrible thing to say.

I was under the impression that the expression "Padlocking your arsehole" or "Taping up your arsehole" is a reference normally used when someone is sent to prison and is fearing being raped.

It was a stupid thing to say but imo is not a sackable offense, it really does just look like to me they where trying to get rid of the player and this was the best reason they could up with, which could be considered ageist in itself.

we can agree that if the guy was black, then padlock my wallet would be racist, right?

i don't think you can say "it's a retarded comment by an idiot trying to prove how white he is. i don't think he was implying in anyway that he or any other black guy is a thief, just that his wallet is off limits."

it doesn't work, and it's the same thing whether you use gays, asians or anybody else. it's insulting.

"no, he's just really really against crime!"

                  do me a favor.

If Suarez had tweeted that would you all be saying he should be sacked? I don't think so...

And who said that footballers should be role models? Its not part of the contract, they're not Politicians paid for by our taxes. There's no intellectual exam to ensure that they're able to make sensible comments. They're paid to kick a ball about, nothing else.
Points taken. However a little bit of common sense never goes amiss, the same goes for people in any position in the public eye.

Unfortunately, I can't agree here. Try telling that to Justin Fashanu. Or Gary Speed (albeit a different cause). We can never assume our point of view to be valid for everyone else.

But ultimately we have to, at least by consensus. You might be driven to suicide if I called you a fanny flap on the Internet (don't kill yourself, i didn't really mean it ). Lines have to be drawn somewhere.

Indeed, but fanny flap isn't quite the same as saying [rhethorically]: "If you're in the same room as XYZ, put a padlock on your arse, otherwise when you close those eye bwoi, cock's going in".

Anyway, ****it, I'm glad he's sacked, it's produced a ****e thread. Actually, many threads have become quite dire [no offense intended to anyone participating], I think it's time I took a holiday

It's not really about the reality of the comment as in reality he would share a room and wouldn't padlock his arse but that's not the point. The point is that being a homosexual in sport, especially team sports, holds a massive stigma and posting what he did in the public domain was hugely irresponsible. He wanted to provoke a reaction and the whole point of Twitter is to be as prolific with your comments as possible. Sacking is slightly over the top, but he should be reprimanded, fined and forced to apologise. His victim didn't deserve to be singled out, in an attempt to humiliate, just because of his sexuality.
