I'm guessing, but I'm sure there would have been other Premiership clubs interested in him - especially the newly promoted teams - but we can only speculate that money talked.

Perhaps he should have considered dropping down the leagues to prolong his career? He said at the time "I wouldn't drop out of the Premier League" and that he believed he could 'carry on playing for another three years' ... if he had joined a team that was suited to his style, regardless of their status, he could still be playing football now.

The newly promoted teams...Reading, QPR and Southampton.

        That's 180, 197 and 219 miles respectively from Chester.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

As much as any other poster - within reason - that talks about a footballer.

I know he was a dick on Soccer AM when the Barnsley fans were in, I know that he sued a builder who then committed suicide, in what could be seen as a tit-for-tat legal battle, I've seen his self-absorbed Tweets and then the rest is just taken for the drivel that spouts from his mouth and what is parped in the press.

From that, I find him to be egotistical, ignorant, self-obsessed and greedy - all traits that I dislike in people. But then I doubt that I'll ever meet him for my opinion to be changed, much like I doubt he cares what I think.

I agree his public persona isn't the best, but I couldn't say "Oooo, I 'ate that duck" because its probably nowhere near the way he is with people he counts as friends or family.

Apparently Alan Shearer is really funny away from the cameras

...And Mark Lawrenson isn't, meaning his public and private personas are exactly the same.

How much do you like George Osborne?

Just pair them up with the ubiquitous Prof. Brian Cox and you've got prime time TV gold.

It was reported that 'several' clubs were interested not *just* the newly promoted teams. Fair enough, if he wanted to stay local, a club 20 miles away were rumoured to be interested - and a boyhood club at that - but I doubt they could offer him too much in wages. But that is just pure speculation.

Perhaps his agent had just run out of superlatives to slap in a portfolio.

I always think Mark Lawrenson isn't a real person. For me he'll always be a key character in a great, lost episode of Seinfeld.

His public persona isn't the best and I have no emotional investment or support in him or who he represents.

I wouldn't have booed him at the paralympics though, I couldn't be bothered.

You're either a master of understatement or perversely using Jimmy Savile as some sort of yardstick.

That's quite possibly because you are more mature than me ... or that I have anger issues ... or that I have very little patience ... or all three.

                            Now that's just crazy talk.

You're right. There's only one person worth booing and that's Owen.
