A €110m increase on his price from a few months earlier level good world cup?

He played 17 games in the Portuguese league plus whatever number of games at the world cup.

In June 2022 he cost €10m, in January 2023 he goes for €120m.

How much is a proven top class midfielder worth then?

It is crazy money and if any wide forward prices will be benchmarked against the prices for Mudryk or Antony, then the same could be said about future prices for young up and coming midfielders thanks to the Fernadez price.

And yes a player is only worth as much as a team will pay, but with more clubs having silly money there will always be some club willing to throw a stupid amount at the latest shiney thing.

I mean on one level they've been very smart in dishing out these super-long contracts. Played the system to their advantage.

If more players work out on the pitch than not, then it will be a gamble that pays off big time.

If more flop than not, it ends up being something that will hinder their ability to spend in a few years and could see them on financial thin ice like Barca were/are.

Either he is going to be a superstar and he is worth that or the hype after the WC means his value is massively inflated, to be honest I've no idea which it is but given the profit margin it seems like no brainer for Benfica to sell.

They spent more than we have in about 5 years ffs

Or they could have a disaster with a bunch of Winston Bogarde's sitting on long lucrative contracts.

He’s not worth that Jaco but I can understand with some logic based on WC and “performing” in Europe (small sample size and Portuguese league caveats) why he could be worth the risk. Mudryk is just bonkers

Just live in the hope when the loophole is closed they also include the max period for spreading the cost is 5 years, regardless of longer contracts already in effect

There’s a good chance he could flop or just be ok but nothing special.

Argentina really didn’t even play that well until the semis and he doesn’t look like the most physical, so how he handles the physicality and strength of the prem will be interesting.

There’s an inherent level of risk in any transfer so When a club makes multiple huge splurges per player, they really are gambling a lot as opposed to several cheaper or mid value players. Cheaper being anything under 30 mil these days and mid being between 30 and 60 mil, the markets out of control.

I wonder where Chelsea’s recent transfer spend stats put them vs countries GDP

Around Dominica and American Samoa for transfer spend. Meaning that they have spent more in transfer fees than the GDP of Tonga since the takeover, 17 footballers worth more than 106k people without even including their wages.

If you include what boehlys consortium paid to acquire the club, he’s spent more than the 2021 GDP of Togo and is around Montenegro or 151st in the world.

Transfer fees from before the start of the new rule will be spread over the length of the contract signed.

Plus the new max % of how much of your income can be spent on wages, transfer fees, agents fees and I think general staff wages etc kicks in from the summmer.

Right now you can spend 90% of your income, it drops to 70% in the summer, and guess what? Deals signed before the change work under what system was in place when the deals were made.

So also expect the state owned clubs like Newcastle and City to suddenly find new sponsors that pay crazy amounts so their incomes are raised.

Fortunately there is an infinite number of companies that can be made up to sponsor these clubs

From a FPP perspective there is a **** load of gambles in there, and I mean a lot, if 40% pay off they are in the clear.

From ROI perspective I really am struggle to see the growth perspective with that much spend.

Can't see a new stadium in sight, Nor a prolonged tilt at winning everything ?

I can't see a 4-8 year massive bump in value in dare I say it the Franchise ?
I make no apologies, this is me

The 'market' has been '****ed' for a long, long time. I think we're all just jealous as **** at Chelseas ability to spend as they have done.
I mean there was already a gap in riches between the PL and everyone else, but now there's the oil clubs, the PL, and then everyone else. Everything at least seemed to be settling down for a while, but now Chelsea are out swinging dick like FFP doesn't exist, what's stopping Dortmund pointing at 110m for Enzo and asking for far more for Bellingham now?

Unless there's a generally accepted notion that there is a 'Chelsea/PSG/City' price and then a price for everyone else, we're going to struggle
