Saturday March 24,2012
By Matt Law
ROBIN van PERSIE has shot to the top of Real Madrid’s wanted list and Arsenal fear the striker may be tempted by a move to Spain.
Madrid had been battling Barcelona to try to sign Neymar from Santos, but it now seems the Brazilian is destined for the Nou Camp.
That has made Van Persie Madrid’s No 1 target and the La Liga leaders will test Arsenal’s resolve to keep him with a £25 million bid, with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero also among the Spanish club’s top targets.
City themselves want Van Persie and are prepared to hand him a £200,000-a-week contract. But sources close to the Dutchman are unsure whether he would be prepared to play for a Premier League club other than Arsenal, who will offer their captain a new £125,000-a-week deal, plus a signing-on fee and £5m loyalty bonus to stay.
The board have also discussed rejecting all bids for their top scorer if he does not agree an extension to his current deal that expires in 2013. But there are fears Madrid’s interest could turn the head of Van Persie, who has 37 goals for club and country this season.
It is a record placing him among the all-time greats, according to the man trying to come up with a plan to stop him today, Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish.
“Van Persie seems to have gone to another level,” said McLeish, above. “He has mental toughness, he has shown he can regularly score in any company now. He has always been technically brilliant and I’d guess the learning curve for him was to get into the places where it hurts to score goals.
“He can score them differently – with his head, shots from the edge of the box, drives, tap-ins, chips. His finishing has been amazing this season.”
Villa, having spent three seasons under Martin O’Neill trying to reach the Champions League, are now on hold until owner Randy Lerner can sort out the finances.
McLeish can only look on with envy at the top clubs and what Van Persie’s goals are doing for Arsenal.
“Van Persie has to be recognised as one of the best players in the world at the moment,” said McLeish when asked if he ranked with Lionel Messi and Cristian Ronaldo.
“If Van Persie gets the same amount of goals, or even close to it next season or the one after, he is going to be mentioned in the same breath.
“I came up against him early in his career when Rangers played Feyenoord, I think he scored in Holland. We knew then he was going to be a superstar.
“Arsene Wenger must be counting his blessings Van Persie has not had an injury. In the last couple of years when Arsenal have lost Van Persie they’ve had that dip.
“It’s laughable people have been questioning Wenger. His prowess is phenomenal.”

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/foo...-signings.htmlArsenal manager Arsène Wenger to target Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila as he plans for summer signings
Arsène Wenger has made reinforcing the holding midfield position one of his transfer priorities this summer, with France international Yann M’Vila and Anderlecht captain Lucas Biglia on his radar.
While the form of Alex Song has delighted the Arsenal manager, he also realises his side lack experienced cover in this position and both M’Vila and Biglia are being monitored.
M’Vila is understood to be the preferred option and has been watched by Arsenal scouts this month, with Rennes already resigned to losing their star player at the end of the season.
Aged 21 and with 18 France caps, M’Vila is regarded among the best young midfielders in Europe but is also being tracked by both Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
Rennes would value M’Vila at around £17 million, which would break Arsenal’s transfer record, but the fear is that the price could be driven up even further by the competing interest of Real Madrid.
Arsenal also targeted M’Vila last summer when it was made clear by Rennes that he would not be for sale at any price.
While Song has also been an increasingly important creative influence this season for Arsenal, M’Vila is regarded as more of a natural in the specialist holding midfield role.
Although Arsenal have no shortage of emerging central midfielders, the concern is that Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby are all players who also like to push forward.
Song’s defensive qualities have made him a regular over the past four seasons — and he is likely to be offered a significantly improved contract later this year — but there has been a lack of obvious cover.
Emmanuel Frimpong and Francis Coquelin are both highly promising but largely still unproven at the very highest level.
The addition of a player such as M’Vila would also give Wenger the option of sometimes playing with two holding midfielders.
If M’Vila becomes too expensive, Arsenal will also consider making an offer for Biglia, an Argentine international who has helped Anderlecht to win five trophies over the past six years.
Arsenal have already agreed terms with Cologne on the £11 million signing of Lukas Podolski and confirmation of his arrival this summer is expected within the next week.
