Anyway, I think there are three issues here which must be treated separately, but are being mixed up and confused.

1. The culture. To most of us posting here right now, it is abhorrent. Disgusting. Wrong. Is it illegal? No. Not as long as everyone is consenting. So you start straying into the grey areas...

2. The crime and proven guilt, and the lack of contrition. The guy has been found guilty of one of the worst crimes. It may be a miscarriage of justice, it may not. We know what happened may not be morally acceptable to most of us, but was it actually a crime? I firmly believe that even convicted criminals have the right to maintain and fight for their innocence if they believe they have been wrongly convicted. Some guy in Ireland was lambasted recently for comparing the case to the Birmingham 6 or Guildford 4. I get the point. Those guys fought for their right to be re-tried and won. Before that moment, they were the scum of the Earth. After, they were victims. For me, this case could serve to be an educational flagpost, a turning point, where the greater culture of sex is re-examined. But that is separate from the right to maintain your innocence.

3. The right to serve your punishment, then be rehabilitated. When does the punishment end for this type of crime? When the jail sentence comes to an end, or never? Should an individual be prevented from working and reintegrating into society after such a crime? In my view, no. So to me at least, employers should be free to re-employ offenders. If they don't, then how will that help the individual, or the greater society? It doesn't. In my view the campaign to stop Evans being re-employed has been hijacked somewhat, and misguided despite its best intentions.

So to conclude, people are mixing the three very separate elements of this situation up, jumbling them around and coming out with actions which are not helping matters. This sorry episode might well be a first step to reforming this disgusting sub culture (how old do I sound?), and in that respect it may well be a necessary step for society to take, but it has gathered a momentum where critical thought has fallen by the wayside in a rush to condemn.
