as when they do a close up shot of the pitch and action they are just standard advert boards.

That's a fairly regular thing that TV corporations do, certainly ITV were doing it for the last Euros.
You'll usually notice it's switched off for action replays etc, but when done badly its very apparent live.....it actually switched on and off there a couple minutes back during play.
