I can't believe that we are debating the merits of Wayne Rooney achieving a minor achievement in a team which, historically, hasn't achieved anything.

Well, historically it has. Only 8 others teams have won the World Cup in almost 100 years. I know it was almost 50 years ago. But that isnt what you are trying to suggest.

If I was Rooney I'd have turned down the pen and waited for a real goal to make the record.

Breaking the all time scoring record for your country? Nah, seems like a bit of a pointless milestone to me.

As much as we seem to want to do Rooney down on here, I think its something thats fairly impressive. He might not have scored in World Cup finals or at times when England were up against it. But he has been fairly consistent with his goals over the years, rarely having a lean period. You can only score against the teams you play, and a 1 in 2 record for any side is decent.

I think Rooney could have been a lot better player than he currently is, he had more potential at a young age than anyone I can remember from England (Maybe Sterling is the exception here) But to say this isnt really an achievement is wrong.

It is an impressive achievement when you bare in mind the record has stood for 40 years of so and that Rooney is only 29 so could play regularly for another another 4 years may be more, he has a chance to extent that significantly, and that would be a difficult record to beat, he has achieved it because he broke into the side at such a young age and avoided major injuries.

There are players with better goals to games ratios but he has played more games - in fact he will probably go on to break the most number of caps record as well - He is joint 5th at the moment with 107, Beckham is the most capped out field player with 115 and Peter Shilton most capped overall with 125. Given that England have 5 games between now and March, plus the Euros in the summer and presumably some warm up games before hand he could pass Beckham before next season.

He hasn't really broken England's all-time scoring record though has he? The record was frozen in time when Russia and Yugoslavia split. Rooney has just set a new record for other England strikers to aspire to.

Fair play to Rooney for doing that. If Kane can stay fit for as long as Rooney has I'm sure he'll have it cracked next. Still won't have much bearing to the records set by Moore or Linekar.

Edit: and with the extended countries being allowed to play in world cups, etc, I bet Rooney is already worried his record won't hold for long.

One of the articles on the Guardian site suggested that watching the game made it feel more of an achievement - 'you scored that many playing for this turgid shower'.

It's clearly a real achievement even if it exposes the limitations of England in some ways. Most top footballing nations have multiple players in the modern era on or above that number.

Very much so. I think he's actually suffered from being played out of position at times, and his urge to get back and help out instead of concentrating on just scoring goals and being around the area.
