There are now just five days to go before the announcement is made at Wembley Stadium but England’s new manager Roy Hodgson offered an insight into how to go about selecting a squad for a major championships when he was a columnist for Telegraph Sport during the 2010 World Cup Finals.

Hodgson indicated that he would not repeat the mistake he committed when he took Switzerland to the 1994 World Cup finals by admitting that he “got it wrong” in selecting a squad “doubling up in positions, ensuring that each one was covered by a similar player to the first-choice”.

Hodgson explained: “Mike Kelly, my assistant, told me that I should consider taking some players who may not be as useful in the games as they would be off-the-field and in the dressing room.

His argument was that we didn’t need 23 players - in any World Cup squad there will be at least five or six players who don’t get a game - so don’t leave behind the ‘good lads’.” Hodgson ignored this advice.

“I left behind several players whom I knew and trusted in favour of more ‘suitable’ cover players,” he added. “This decision rankles with me even today. The five I should have left at home I took and the five I should have taken, I left at home.”

I've been warming to Neville since he's been a pundit.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Judging by the latest Carlsberg ad, that's exactly what they want.

Anyone fancy having a crack at the squads - your squad, plus the squad you think Hodgy will pick? It's ****ing difficult - precious few standout players and loads and loads of average muck of a very similar standard.

                      Certs:

                      Hart
                      A Cole
                      Gerrard
                      Lampard
                      Rooney
                      Parker
                      Barry
                      Milner
                      Walcott!

                      9 players? Out of 23?

Possibles, for the remaining 14 spots, off the top of my head:
                      1. Carson
                      2. Green
                      3. K Walker
                      4. Richards
                      5. Terry
                      6. Ferdinand
                      7. Jones
                      8. Jagielka
                      9. Lescott
                      10. Cahill
                      11. Baines
                      12. Glen Johnson (as if! )
                      13. Cleverley
                      14. Oxlade-Chamberlain
                      15. Young
                      16. Lennon
                      17. Downing
                      18. Adam Johnson
                      19. Sturridge
                      20. Crouch
                      21. Bent
                      22. Defoe
                      23. Holt
                      24. Carroll
                      25. Welbeck
                      26. Zamora
