Looks about right, I have a feeling Downing will get in there perhaps at Lennons loss and Terry will be left behind with Cahill going in his place

Doesn't fill you with confidence does it !

Just seen Hodgson talking about Gary Neville's appointment, saying he's been very impressed by his the tactical knowledge he's seen as a pundit on Sky

Hodgson indicated that he would not repeat the mistake he committed when he took Switzerland to the 1994 World Cup finals by admitting that he “got it wrong” in selecting a squad “doubling up in positions, ensuring that each one was covered by a similar player to the first-choice”.

Hodgson explained: “Mike Kelly, my assistant, told me that I should consider taking some players who may not be as useful in the games as they would be off-the-field and in the dressing room.

His argument was that we didn’t need 23 players - in any World Cup squad there will be at least five or six players who don’t get a game - so don’t leave behind the ‘good lads’.” Hodgson ignored this advice.

“I left behind several players whom I knew and trusted in favour of more ‘suitable’ cover players,” he added. “This decision rankles with me even today. The five I should have left at home I took and the five I should have taken, I left at home.”

I actually don't see what is wrong with that. It's not elegantly put but the idea of taking players you trust and who would improve the group dynamic as fringe players hardly seems ridiculous to me. I've often stated my opinion that a good squad is not just about ability but personality/mentality too.

Obviously there has to be a balance with ability but realistically ever England coach who has got to a major finals in my lifetime has taken at least 3 players they knew were unlikely to make their starting selections.

Report: Rio axed from the England Euro 2012 squad

            Sport Football Euros England

The Guardian is reporting that the Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been excluded from new England manager Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad to be announced tomorrow.

The paper says "a dismayed Ferdinand is convinced it is directly linked to his issues with [John] Terry and the potential divisions that might have been caused" within the squad over Terry's upcoming trial where he faces charges of allegedly racially abusing Rio's brother Anton during a match.

The Guardian also claims that Stoke striker Peter Crouch and Man City right back Micah Richards have been told they are being left out.

Hodgson won't take Rio and Terry

              May 15, 2012

              By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent
New England boss Roy Hodgson spoke with John Terry and Rio Ferdinand on Tuesday and has decided that only one can go to Euro 2012, according to ESPN sources.

The expectation is that the Chelsea captain will miss out on the European Championships, but that remains unconfirmed until the squad is announced at 1pm on Wednesday.

The exact nature of Hodgson's conversations are to remain confidential, but it appears it would be too tricky to integrate both players for the duration of the tournament given the circumstances of Terry's impending court case involving Rio's brother Anton.

Terry has already been stripped of the England captaincy, and while the FA made it clear to Fabio Capello that Terry cannot wear the armband, the catalyst for the Italian's departure, it would not block the centre-half being in the squad.

ESPN has been told that Hodgson decided to leave the discussions with Terry and Ferdinand until the day before the squad announcement to assess every option at his disposal.

Hodgson has a problem at centre-half with Terry's natural deputy at club and international level, Gary Cahill, a big risk with a hamstring injury. Chelsea will likely gamble on his fitness in Saturday's Champions League final, leaving Hodgson with a nervy wait to discover if he can take the defender to Ukraine and Poland.

A seasoned campaigner in tournament football, Hodgson knows there is no substitute for experience, particularly players who have been to big tournaments before, and Ferdinand is set to provide a wise head despite concerns he cannot play in every game of the tournament due to fitness limitations.

England's most heralded names have, by their own admission, failed to perform on the big stage in the past, but Hodgson is of the mind to give them one last chance in this summer's finals.

It would be funny if they both got left out though.

Can't wait to see the squad.

Shocked that Terry, Ferdinand and Richards have all been left out. Be interesting to see what happens with Johnson too.

I bet Konchesky has been told to postpone his holidays.

Terry can't possibly be there to **** with the preparations again. Last time it was Bridge, this time Rio and Anton.
