England and Holland also seem to be playing a game of 'let's see who has got the worst centre backs' at the minute.

England leading having thrown Phil Jagielka on with Stones. Holland trying to see if Daly Blind can win it for them.

At least Hodgson will be able to dampen down any expectation that followed after the Germany game.

We actually look ok with forward players but Walker, Smalling , Stones and Rose got to be the worst back four of England all time.

Rose another one footed player who gets shown onto his right peg and looks like his brain is gonna explode if he has to use it.

Didn't see this, did you count the two from Leicester too?

The bloke will stick with his tried and trusted 40 years experience rubbish and play a dull and compact formation at the Euros, mark my words. It'll be safety first and try not to concede snoozefest. Always is with him at the helm.

Oh and all this speculation as to whether Rooney will start. Of course he will, there's NO WAY Roy Hodgson will drop him.

I doubt England will do much at the tournament, our defence is a real problem with the only hope is for us to try and outscore the opposition. Something I can't see us doing, combination of players and tactics preventing it.

Phil Jagielka set to miss out on Euro 2016 as Roy Hodgson considers taking seven defenders

Phil Jagileka looks set to miss out on a place in England’s squad for Euro 2016 with Roy Hodgson again considering taking just seven defenders.

The England manager needs to create space in his 23-man squad for an extra forward and is willing to sacrifice a defender to do so.

The perceived wisdom is that eight defenders are usually selected for such tournaments although England took seven to the last World Cup with Hodgson selecting just one specialised right-back in Glen Johnson.

This time it looks likely that Hodgson will again take just seven – three central defenders in Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill and John Stones and four full-backs in Nathaniel Clyne, Kyle Walker, Ryan Bertrand and Danny Rose when his squad is announced on May 12.

Jagielka is currently out with a damaged hamstring having aggravated the injury during the recent FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United and there are concerns that he might not feature again for Everton this season.

The 33-year-old has also fallen down the pecking order in the England squad.

It had been hoped by now that his Everton team-mate Stones would emerge as the most likely defensive partner for Chris Smalling at next month’s finals in France but that now appears to be more likely to Cahill although there are also concerns also over the Chelsea defender’s form and fitness.

Hodgson has a number of injury headaches – chief amongst them Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson and he may have to make tough calls about the midfielders who would, if fit, both be pushing for a starting place when England kick off against Russia on June 11.

Wilshere has finally returned to first-team action having been out all season as he recovers from a broken leg. The Arsenal midfielder made his return as a late substitute against Sunderland two Sundays ago but was an unused substitute against Norwich City on Saturday.

The worry in the England camp is whether they can risk including the injury-prone 24-year-old given his lack of game time and given that Hodgson is hoping to consistently field close to his first-choice XI in the three warm-up matches scheduled before his squad departs for France on June 6.

Henderson, meanwhile, is in a race against time to be fit having suffered knee ligament damage. If he is ruled out it will be a significant blow to Hodgson as he regards the Liverpool captain as a key player.

In a recent media briefing organised by the Football Association Hodgson discussed the configuration of his 23-man squad. “The 23 don't forget, you have to take three goalkeepers and you've got to take at least seven back players,” he said. "I suppose you might argue you could take six but it would be a very, very risky thing to do to take six back players to play the number of games we hope to play.

"Most people would agree that seven is a minimum on the back players, so there's 10 of your places gone for starters so you've left with 13 places and that's for all your midfielders and forwards.
