Serious suggestion, how about (don't laugh) taking the keepers after 20 mins of extra time. Play is started with a drop ball in the centre circle and the game continues until someone scores.

Pens are a brutal way to end a game. The golden goal is great in concept but it often just degenerates into a standoff w/ neither side willing to attack for fear of leaving themselves open to the counter. The only way to solve it at that point is for the players to measure up and see whose got the biggest cock.

A few hearty challenges would be triffic. Like on FIFA 96 for the Megadrive where you could turn off fouls and offsides.
