Liverpool FC in talks with Hoffenheim over signing Gylfi Sigurdsson

    Jun 16 2012

LIVERPOOL FC have opened talks with Hoffenheim over signing Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Brendan Rodgers is eager to make the Iceland international his first capture as Anfield boss and Reds officials were yesterday believed to be negotiating a price for the midfielder with the German club.

Hoffenheim are understood to have quoted Liverpool more than the 9 million euros (around £7m) fee Swansea had agreed for the former Reading man.

Sigurdsson had been set to join the Swans, where he spent the final months of last season on loan, after the South Wales club agreed to pay for his services.

However, Rodgers’ switch to Merseyside prompted the player to rethink his future, with Sigurdsson now reportedly eager to link up with his former manager.

But the Northern Irishman yesterday said: “First and foremost, Gylfi is a Hoffenheim player.

“I wanted to sign him for Swansea but, like I’ve said to him and his representatives, that has to be his first port of call.

“If he comes into the market for whatever reason – and I’m sure there’ll be a number of clubs interested in Gylfi – then of course I would like to be in a position to put our case here at Liverpool to sign him.

“But I’ve always said I think he’s a player Swansea have had an agreement with and they have to have every chance to try to sign him. That’s only right.

“If anything changes from that, we’ll look at it from there.”

Rodgers admits he has his eye on a few targets. whom he thinks can really make a difference at Anfield.

“I think there are a few players who can come in and improve the group straight away,” he said. the Northern Irishman. “I know the types of player I need to bring here to make us function well and that’s something myself, the club and the board will look at.

“I know what we’ve got, more or less, in the squad, but I also know there are a couple of signings that could really improve what we do.”

Rodger,s meanwhile, has boosted Joe Cole’s hopes of resurrecting his Anfield career by insisting every player will start with a clean slate when they return to training next month.

However, the 30-year-old is well-known to Rodgers from their time together at Chelsea and the new manager, who has already spoken to Cole, stressed everyone will get a fresh start.

“I met up with Joe Cole when I was in Spain,” said the Reds boss, who has returned from holiday to begin work at Melwood in earnest.

“I certainly know he’s looking to come back. I’ve got to assess all the players.

“For me it’s fresh for everyone – I’ll be new into the club. When a new manager comes into any club, it always sparks off that renewed motivation for players.”

“The cycle with Kenny (Dalglish) was a terrific cycle but I’m a different tactician and a different type of person and that will give all the players an opportunity to perform.

“With the likes of Joe – he’s a very talented player.

      Reds speaking with Sigurdsson

Iceland midfielder talking with Liverpool, among others

      Last Updated: June 16, 2012 6:08pm

Sky Sports understands that Gylfi Sigurdsson, who appeared to be on his way to Swansea, is speaking with Liverpool and other Premier League clubs.

Having spent the second half of the 2011/12 season on loan at the Liberty Stadium, the Swans made the acquisition of Sigurdsson's services on a permanent basis a top summer priority.

A club record £6.8million fee was agreed with Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim, with then Swans boss Brendan Rodgers prepared to spend big in order to get his man.

Rodgers has, however, since left his post in South Wales to take charge of Liverpool.

Doubts were immediately raised regarding Sigrdusson's deal with Swansea, with it expected that an approach from Anfield would be on the cards.

Rodgers announced on Friday that he would not hijack any deal that had been put in place, but he is prepared to pounce if the 22-year-old becomes available.

It appears that is now the case, with it understood that transfer talks are being held between Liverpool and Sigurdsson's representatives.

The Reds are not the only side in the running, though, with a man who netted seven times in 19 appearances for Swansea last term generating plenty of interest.

Maybe we can now sign Philip Lahm and Tony Currie as well.
