But you can compare their age and contract situation. Otherwise this part of the arguement should not be relevant and the conversation should be about if he can bring something to the team we don't have and/or is there a realistic/better alternative who'd want to join us for simmilar value? If age isn't an issue for signing RVP then it shouldn't be for Dempsey.Originally posted by Lee View Post

You can't compare RVP with Clint Dempsey.

I am not comparing them as players. People on here keep saying you can't pay more than £5M for a 29 year old with one year on their contract. The fact is, Dempsey was in the top 5 scoring in the league, is far less injury prone than RVP and started playing professional football at 21, so he has fewer miles on him. RVP is world class, obviously in another league. It's fair to me that some don't like Dempsey as a player, but the pithy sports cliches of his value as an expression of his age and his contract are bunk."Our legacy begets an excellence that surpasses the particulars of who produces it." -- David Carr

I agree with you to an extent. But RVP is a far, far superior player to Dempsey.Originally posted by fatistuta View PostBut you can compare their age and contract situation. I've also mentioned before about players of value and who would realistically join us - I've seen nothing in the many times that I've seen Dempsey play that makes me think he'd be a good signing.

Yakubu scored 17 in 30 league games last season. Would you be happy if we stumped up £10m for him?Originally posted by BrooklynRed View PostI am not comparing them as players. It seems like everyone is determined to make it look like there totally arbitrary judgement of the 'correct' transfer fee is the right one. I think BrooklynRed is simply pointing out that we should focus on the utility of the player first rather than their age and contract situation.
For me Dempsey is a good fit as a signing; he can score from a wide starting position and brings good energy to the defensive side.
We have no idea how much most transfers actually end up costing when you account for agents fees, wages, tax etc. So it seems a bit odd to get very worked up about the reported price of a transfer."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

But generally a players value drops as they hit 30 and decreases along with their contract. There will always be exceptions and a bidding war will always bump up prices, but personally I believe that if you took the super rich clubs (City, Chelsea, PSG, Madrid) out of the equation, you'd be looking at about £15m for Van persie.Originally posted by BrooklynRed View PostI am not comparing them as players. We don't have a bidding war or no rich clubs bumping value up so you'd like to be able to think we could negotiate a slightly better deal than £10m.
We sold Owen for less FFS because he only had one year left.If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Good to hear you're doing good mate!... Well it seems most got their pants in a twist over inaccurate information....or so Fulham would like their fans to believe... So we'd expect this to be confirmed in the next 48hrs then...Originally posted by SB View PostAll good here on the Gold Coast my friend. We need you to help tip the scales back to the sane side mate
I wouldn't mind the add ons bit like you mentioned & realistic wages hopefully. Just hope we get it sorted quickly so he's got time to gel.
..
Hope not like, not that I do not rate him, but because we can aim a bit higher... Owens available LOL.......
........... now that wasn't a sane comment lol

Fulham have denied Clint Dempsey has been sold to Liverpool after a report on the Reds' owners' website claimed the forward had joined the club.
A post on Fenway Sports Group's website said Liverpool had "added Clint Dempsey to a team that came within a game of winning the FA Cup".
The website report was later removed, and the Reds also confirmed they had not signed the player.
A Fulham spokesperson told BBC Sport: "We have not received any bids."
Although the website is the official homepage of FSG, it is hosted by sports network company NESN.com, who posted the original story.
It was uploaded at 05:44 BST and was live for just over five hours before it was removed.
Liverpool did not give any details on how the post came to be published.
Dempsey has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks.
The USA international scored 23 goals in 46 appearances last season and has one year left on his contract at Craven Cottage, with Fulham keen to extend his stay.
Liverpool, who recently signed Italy forward Fabio Borini from Roma, are currently on a pre-season tour of North America.I make no apologies, this is me
