Gerrard isn't far off, to my mind. Legs going, but his close control, passing and shooting are still there. He even took decent corners in the Euro's!
    I haven't seen (m)any Stevie thunderbolts recently...

He's not necessarily wrong, apart from the 'much better' bit.

On what planet does Alonso "offer nothing"? He's more their metronome than Xavi is. I get that he *may* restrict Xavi a bit. Also Martinez is a fantastic player but he's quite different to Alonso and is more inclined to get forward.

Also I loved that my Manc mate said all that crap - "offers nothing" - on the same day Xabi went and scored both goals v France

Perhaps the "offers nothing" bit too?

Alonso is the 5th most capped Spanish player of all time.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Alonso is on a par with Xabi and Iniesta, imo.

Iniesta is on another level but plays a different style really. In his position, Alonso is easily top 3 in the world.

On today's performance, Pirlo is better than Xabi Alonso.

On any day's performance, Pirlo is better than Xabi.

I'll get my tints off and say this. Pirlo~Xavi>Xabi.

I love Xabi but he is definitely not better than Pirlo. between Pirlo and Xavi, it all comes down to personal taste. I'd take Pirlo. Mind you before this season, he has been utter gash like Stevie has been but his move away from Milan has done him good.

At this level, I'd say Pirlo better than Xavi. Even over the courses of their careers, Pirlo is better.

Agree to disagree there. Xabi Alonso for me every single time. Pirlo is fantastic btw, but Xabi is just near perfection for me.

Yup I'd go for Xabi everytime.

Difficult to compare players who are a different sort of player. If that makes sense.
