The came together, conducted a root and branch investigation into the way football was being run, thought about how they wanted to play the game. They put a plan in place and here we are a few years later and they're back to being one of the best sides in the world. So with that in mind...

For me, the first thing that needs to happen is the dismanteling of the old boys club that is the FA. They're a joke of an organisation. Hodgson being installed as manager says it all really.

Secondly, the media needs to be put in its place. For far too long, the English media has been allowed to have far too great an impact on the way England plays the game. You can almost sense the fear when players play for England. This is a tricky one, but something needs to be done.

Thirdly, they need to identify a playing style to aspire to. No matter who the next manager of Spain, Italy or Brazil is, you know the style of football they will play. England should look to replicate this for the sake of continuity. It can't help chopping and changing tactical setups every 4 years.

Fourth, the woeful technical ability of English players needs to be addressed. More development work has to be done with young players, because last night was embarrassing for England. Incapable of keeping possession. Shocking.

Fifth, they should identify a team of people to work on this project and give them time. In the same way as Germany put Klinsmann and Loew in charge. Dare I say, I think there should be a place for Gary Neville in the setup, with a bright upcoming manager. This team should look at best practice across Europe and start putting these things into place.

Sixth, they need to do away with a load of the old guard and start fresh. Start giving the upcoming youngsters international experience.

Basically, a total rethink is required. A total spring clean.

The trouble with the root and branch investigations the FA conduct is they seem to leave themselves out of it!

The markings I have seen for most England players are a joke. Other than the first 20 mins it was utter domination from italy, masterminded by Pirlo - who gave about as perfect a performance as you could hope to see.

I thought Glen Johnson was also outstanding last night, and the England defence did play well - but they were creaking. The midfield was basically Gerrard on his own, and there was no out ball at all. Rooney was just horrific. I think Rooney on his day is a really top (top) player. But he tends to disappear in big games against decent centre backs. He has been **** for England for so long.

The England team looked weak on paper and turned out that way.

            Pirlo though, was awesome!

              they are trying mate.

i coach at youth level and over the last year or so weve been hearing different strategies and the one that the FA and southgate went for was to stop 11 year olds playing 11 a side football.

a uni in scotland (abertay) did a study showing the amount of touches per kid per format (5 a side, 7 a side, 9 a side and 11 a side).

It showed pretty conclusively that the less players on the pitch the more touches each player gets. imo Thats the way forward combined with better all year round pitches.

Theyre not blameless though because the FA spent nearly a billion on wembley, if you think how many astro pitches for community / amateur club use could have been created nationwide its a bit of a joke.

If the english youth system was better we would produce the best players in the world. I think segura said that if you had two players (one english and one foreign) of equal technical and tactical ability you would always go for the english one because of the increased aggression and physical traits.

The euro campaign is over but lets see what side roy picks for the qualifiers for brazil. im pretty sure we will still see terry and lampard, gerrard, barry and parker in the team. So as carra said the manager of the national team is now at odds with the new footballing philosophy of the nation.

This Pirlo masterclass stuff is way over the top.

He was good last night, because England played into his hands. If we'd stood off Alonso like that he'd have killed us.

I've seen much better performances from much better players.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

It was the sort of game if you have that talent in your locker, you would look amazing, Shame, If Aquiliani was playing in that position last night we might have actually recouped a few quid as I reckon he would have also looked a world beater

No space in between the lines both fullbacks pushed up front four pressing constantly. Most indisciplined player up front and gerrard drops deep to make sure england arent outnumbered. Wide players can cut in allowing full backs to make the width and two central midfield players worj hard to get thw ball back and distribute quickly.
It doesn't matter who is in Starting line up, the England team is ****.
