OK, not to post a stupid question, but this is a sports translation issue for me in the USA...
In football, players wages are listed as "per week". How is an annual wage bill finally calculated? Is the player's per week multiplied by 52? Do internationals get paid while away on duty? Summer vacation do you still make the same wage?
I guess what I am saying is why not just say "the player is making £3 million a year" or "they've signed a four year contract worth £12 million"?
Does the difference come from a working tradition where the impression is that footballers are just like everyone else who works piecemeal on a weekly wag? I don't think of my own contracts as a per week contract, I say you're paying me $X a year.
It makes it hard for me to understand the full wage load and I don't know the full calendar of how players are paid. Maybe I am just a product of my environment; American sports are obsessed with rules about setting wage caps, revenue sharing, contract details, etc, so I find it strange that football wage structures are so hard to get a handle on.
Thoughts appreciated... This is not an indictment of the system and tradition, just trying to understand...
