Sunderland reopen talks for Liverpool outcast Borini

    24 Dec 2014 14:00:00

The Italy international forward was close to reuniting with the Black Cats over the summer but his hopes of securing his future at Anfield have faded and January could see him move

    By Graeme Bailey

Sunderland have reopened talks with Liverpool over a deal for Fabio Borini, Goal understands.

The Italy international spent the whole of last season on loan at the Stadium of Light and became a firm fan favourite, scoring in a derby win over Newcastle and in the League Cup final defeat by Manchester City.

Sunderland tried to sign Borini in the summer and even agreed a fee of £14 million with the Reds but the forward rejected the move, instead deciding to fight for his future at Anfield.

Borini has been given sporadic chances by Brendan Rodgers this season but it has now been made clear to him that his long-term future lies away from the club and the Black Cats have revived their interest but are looking for a much-reduced fee from the previous deal agreed, believed to want to pay less than £10m.

Rodgers indicated on Wednesday that he is open to the possibility of reinforcing his squad in the January window, telling reporters that "there will always be speculation [...] if there's a possibility to strengthen we will take a look, for the right type of player", and a Borini sale could fund such exploits.

The ex-Chelsea man must now decide whether or not to accept that his Liverpool career is over and if he will agree to move to Sunderland.

A source told Goal: "Sunderland are back in for Borini. A deal is close and a lot now rests with the player but Gus Poyet would really like him at the Stadium of Light."

It'll be for about £3m now.

The internet will not be pleased.

Duncan Jenkins cost Liverpool £500k in the Borini deal. Borini himself will probably cost LFC £7-8m

@AnfieldHQ96 he told the club he wouldn't go to Sunderland, he also refused London. I don't see him changing his stance.

@AnfieldHQ96 Actually we refused to meet his pay off demands so London could be an option.

@AnfieldHQ96 @monkey_sponge Our stance is we won't give him a pay off.

@AnfieldHQ96 @monkey_sponge The reason he never lest Liverpool was due to his pay off demands. That's the 100% truth.

@monkey_sponge @AnfieldHQ96 Not arsed about QPR. I know his pay off demands were not met by Liverpool, so no deal.

Apparently the reason he didn't leave the club in the summer was something to do with his pay off demands

                  Stubborn isn't he....

Fabio Borini's agent says Liverpool FC striker is staying put

Fabio Borini's agent expects the Liverpool striker to remain at Anfield this month.

The Italian’s future has been the subject of speculation with his opportunities having been limited for the Reds so far this term.

Last weekend’s win at Sunderland was Borini’s first Premier League start since the trip to West Ham back in September.

Borini, 23, was told he was surplus to requirements last summer but rejected moves to both Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers, and vowed to force his way back into Brendan Rodgers’ plans.

His agent Marco De Marchi, who also represents Werder Bremen defender Luca Caldirola, said: “Borini and Caldirola will not return to Italy in January.

“I’m happy with Liverpool and Werder Bremen – the teams where they now play.”

The £10m signing has scored twice in 33 Liverpool appearances.

With the difference that Fabio actually seems to care about the club and is trying really hard to give his best - once every other month, when he gets a chance
He isn't very good, but I don't think he deserves any abuse for his attitude. Perhaps if he ever manages to play TWO games in a row for us, he might actually prove to be half-decent.

                            He is ****. Really ****.

And there is hardly 'abuse' directed at him is there? If he really cared about the club he would have known that £14m was a great bit of business for us and he should have left.

Well, you've called him '****' and 'turd' in your last two posts in here

For the people with a passion for stats:

He's not good enough for us, but he's not that ****, he was playing regular PL football last year and the fans loved him, he's not doing well for us but with the amount of playing time that he gets, there's no possibility of that ever changing.
