Our budget is too small and we cannot really afford "good players" for each and every position (we have priorities), which is why we are trying to bring players on the loan.
If the loan option is not attainable then we will go and spend a small amount of money on the player that may be not be a big risk (in terms of financial outlay) but still have the potential to improve our squad like Assaidi.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan clubComment

Of course, we went for Sigurdsen first, but that appeared to be due to his imminent move to Swansea. He had agreed that move with them and just had sign the dotted line on the contract. There was no time to hang about with him.
One thing which was telling imo was that we did not bow to his demands when Spurs came in. We were happy to let him go. However, we did appear to increase the bid for Allen from £12m to £15 in order to land him. You could argue that the club wanted Allen more than Sigurdsen.

the manager might have several targets, but might need to prioritise his time and choices depending on many variables. he may have always wanted allen, but knew he was in the bag. he might have had to try and put allen on the back burner until the gylfi deal was sorted due to the complexity of the deal, and once the wages went up, and tottingham stepped in then things got more than a little drawn out.
no doubt there are other discussions ongoing, some we might be aware of, and maybe others we are in the dark about, like the Assaidi deal.removing all the weak links makes us stronger
