Wanderers appear to have beaten Premier League big spenders QPR and Championship rivals Wolves to the signing of Liverpool midfield maestro Jay Spearing.
It is hoped the midfielder will be putting the finishing touches to a move worth £3million before Friday night’s deadline – making him eligible for the weekend trip to Hull City.
Spearing remains reluctant to leave his boyhood club but has been told his first-team chances at Anfield will be restricted under Brendan Rogers’ new regime.
Both QPR and Wolves are among a handful of clubs who have submitted rival bids, but it is thought Frank McParland, the Reds’ academy director, and Wanderers head of academy coaching Sammy Lee – who worked together as the Reebok management team in 2007 – have both put in a good word to Spearing, which has helped to seal the deal.
If, as expected, the move is ratified at some point today, then the 23-year-old would be in line to make his debut at the KC Stadium.
The question on everyone’s lips as the deadline approaches will be whether Wanderers need to balance the books, having spent unexpected cash on the gifted schemer Spearing.
The club had initially wanted to bring him in on loan, with a view to buy, but found their hand forced when Liverpool invited offers from elsewhere.
Rodgers confirmed this morning there are a number of inquiries about Jay.
Hopefully he'll be gone by Friday.
Is that a direct quote
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.
