Michel Platini: Uefa are considering scrapping Europa League and extending Champions League
Uefa president Michel Platini has admitted that his organistion are considering scrapping the Europa League in favour of extending the Champions League.

Asked about possible plans to extend the elite Champions League at the expense of the second-tier Europa League on Wednesday by the Ouest-France.,
Platini said: "There is an ongoing debate to determine what form the European competitions will have between 2015 and 2018.
"We're discussing it, we will make a decision in 2014.
    Nothing is decided yet."

One of the options being looked at is the possibility of extending the final phase of the Champions League from 32 to 64 teams.
The Europa League generates far lower revenue for clubs than the Champions League and has been criticised since it evolved from the Uefa Cup in 2009.

Meanwhile, the Uefa president said that he was not worried by talk of the creation by Europe's rich clubs of a competition to rival the Champions League.

"It's a question that is regularly brought up," said the former French midfielder.
"It doesn't worry me. I can't see how it could work outside the Uefa framework.
"Who will referee them? In what stadiums will they play? A lot of people want them? I don't think so."

Excellent. Will it be extended to teams finishing around twelfth in the PL?

I think it would be a good thing. Who wants a two teir European system. One thing to make the Europa League instantly more credible is to stop the 3rd place drop outs going into it. It seems as thought it rewards failure doing that.
      *Except Michael, who died.

I always preferred the Cup Winners Cup anyway. Had a much better ring to it.
          Oh I don't know.

              Ridiculous.

They should restrict entry into the CL and make the EL more prestigious by also narrowing entry. Winners of the EL should get a ticket to the CL.

                Agree.

Actually, I'd ramp it up further and put all four semi finalists from the EL into the CL qualifying rounds for the following year - or maybe the winners straight through and the qualifiers for the others.

I honesty would go back to the original format with Champions and holders only qualifying.

The rest in the UEFA Cup and I would even restore the CWC.

Michel Platini in **** Idea Shock.

Cormack and Rich are on the right idea. You only have to see in our county, the Rumbelows cup as **** as it is....its nice to win silverware with a little bit of tinkering the EL could be well worth winning.....like all these secondary comps you try and get through with **** till the latter rounds when you think you can win it.

One huge competition is a nearer step to a euro league.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I'm not sure the big clubs will like this. I think they have eyes on a competition run by themselves without UEFA and FIFA involved at all.

Would that be such a bad thing?
