The Guardian seem intent on defending Hodgson, blaming lack of talent etc.
Anyone would think we'd just drawn with a decent team rather than one with hardly any players (I can't think of any actually but can't be bothered to check) who would make it into the England squad..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I think it's due to the power of the press, I think a lot of football fans are blind to the faults of players/managers unless the media point it out. England: Roy Hodgson responds to Gary Lineker's criticism
Roy Hodgson insists his England team are on the right track despite Gary Lineker's criticism in the wake of the 1-1 draw with Republic of Ireland.
Ex-England striker Lineker said using a 4-4-2 formation on Wednesday took the team "back to the dark ages".
He warned Brazil would "thrash us" in Sunday's Rio friendly, should the game go ahead, if the tactics are repeated.
When informed of those comments, Hodgson said: "Oh well, that's a pity. I thought we played well."

I mean, you're talking about a manager who rates an expected win against Moldova (who were ranked 144th or so at the time) as the highlight of his England reign - at least that's what he was saying before the Ireland game, with such a look of ill-deserved smugness, it made me vomit.
You can also guarantee that particular little nugget has already been added to his bulging CV, right beside the John West trophy.
