Let's face it 10 years ago he or his like would have jumped at the chance join the mighty Reds but time moves on and we're not up there any more, Brendan has his work cut out to get back there and with the financial muscle being thrown about by the moneyed clubs he has a real job on his hands. I'm confident Brendan will get our team playing good football and at the end of the day that's a great start and who knows with a fair wind behind us we'll get up there again.

This is what seems so strange. This morning we are all prepared to play the long game, seemingly sure that he wanted to come here and prepared to pay more than Dortmund later agreed.

And then we admit defeat.

The Echo saying that Dortmund agreed a £20.5 million deal - but we couldn't agree one. I thought though that we were prepared to go to £25 million and HM wanted to come here? Just doesn't add up to me.

I may be wrong but this does seem to me to have the feeling of the club being over confident about getting him and we've dropped a bollock here.

Didn't agree a deal could also mean stopped trying because the player wanted to o to Dortmund.

We may never know why it didn't happen, player wishes, arn's we pissed them off and they got mardy, we wanted a lower price or different payment terms, our lawyers had more issues with the third party side of it, we have changed priority to another target, and probably more. It would all be guesswork, which obviously won't stop journalists and fans guessing.

LFC are up against it with recruiting elite players, thats why the scouting team is there - to buy smartly, to find the less obvious. At the moment, there's no Champions League, there's no guarantee of getting it and the club is still in recovery.

Could mean any number of things. Tend to agree with you that we're dissecting a load of nothing here.

It could also be that Dortmund was prepared to pay a much higher agent fee than us.

Mess him around and you don't get the player. Pay him what he want and you have a great chance to get the deal done.
