Shouldn't that be in the twitter thread Bender?

Hopefully he will agree to give a percentage of his wages back too, on principle. Would his religion have a probblem with Virgin Money or Northern Rock?

Wonga only offer loans at (exorbitant) interest. Virgin Money has a wider range of products. The same applied to Northern Rock.

It seems to me that the he didn't do the same in past years is not the clinching argument it's made out to be.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Indeed. The only disappointment is that none of his teamates backed him up but I guess the realities of Wonga are even further away from professional footballers than some posters here.

My apologies, I wasn't aware the sponsors were now Wong's.com, I thought it was Virgin money he'd taken issue with

Papiss Cisse has been fined for refusing to wear a team shirt showing Newcastle club sponsor Wonga.

He's been hit with an initial fine of £5000, rising to £47,987,654,334 if he hasn't paid by Friday

Yes it is - if you understand Islams view on Interest. If he is using religion as a reason then it almost makes him a hypocrite if thinks it's OK to wear a Virgin Money and not Wonga - there is no difference between the two when it comes to Riba. And the point Charly makes is valid - Wonga is contributing to his salary: would he give up a portion of his salary?

He's drawing a line. It's in a different place to you. I suspect he could find plenty of support among respected Islamic scholars for what he's doing.

Unless you're suggesting all Islamic scholars agree on absolutely everything...which they don't which, in turn, is one reason why there are so many Islamic scholars.

It is all about that 'line'. Where do you draw it? You could go so far as to analyse so much in your life from the ethics of what you have to eat and wear to the taxes you pay or the benefits you get.

Common sense should prevail and in this instance it seems clear to me that Cisse is being reasonable and the club need to respect that.

What the club should do is to allow him to play without Wonga on his shirt. If he's engineering a move away it'll totally scupper his plans

There is no line on Interest - it doesn't matter if it's 1% or 1000%. Its like saying you can drink a tiny bit of alcohol but not drink too much.. If he is still accepting the salary Newcastle are paying him since Wonga started sponsoring Newcastle then he is not being reasonable at all. He is being a hypocrite

Yes he will find many scholars but he doesn't need to speak to a scholar regarding interest as anyone muslim knows about Riba. It's pretty much like alcohol - you can't go anywhere near it. I would happily "support" him in his belief but I won't as he is a hypocrite. They were sponsored by Virgin Money before! So if he didn't go on strike then then he shouldn't now.
