I'd expect someone who is more than just a finisher, especially with our system.

At. Madrid insist Diego Costa will not go anywhere. He will be offered a new contract. His buy out clause is 25 million euros.

A £17m move for Atletico Madrid striker D.Costa appears to have stalled with the Spaniards insisting he will not be leaving (Paul Joyce)

There's mixed opinions on here about this lad whom I've never really seen. Surely a £20m player would get better reviews?
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

So another 20+ million player we got no chance of signing? ..

Odd that .. are we only bidding for players we have no chance of actually signing?

Good way to appease the fans while saving some cash FSG. hmm ... or is this more fallout from bringing in a manager who's learning the job as he goes and has little attraction for quality players. Also taking into account last seasons result.

I can't believe Liverpools standing as a club is this low after such short time of FSG ownership. I don't buy the champions league is the be all and end all for players, maybe for clubs wanting to cash in but not so much players.

Maybe this is in the wrong thread.

I think the Champions League is by far and away the biggest reason. I think some of us underestimate how much it means to players. The fact we've been out of it for a while is certainly scaring off lots of players. Without it you begin to fall off the footballing radar.

It's massively hampering our attempts to bring players in IMO. I think that much is clear and Rodgers has hinted at it recently

                        I agree.

It's also what Arn was saying when he suggested we offer signings a billion pounds a day because otherwise they won't sign. That was silly IMO but the principle - good players, especially around the prime of their career, are shy of joining a team that's so far down the pecking order - is valid. It seems bloody obvious really (no offence).

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I think it's pride that's blinding our fans to our true current status in the world game. I think some people still fail to realise just how far we've fallen.

Most players have short memories and even shorter careers. Yes, we're a big name in world football history, but that gets short shrift from most modern pros. It counts for very little these days unfortunately. They want success now and the past means next to nothing to them.

Yes, history is largely irrelevant. And it's not all down to money either. Man City may pay a ton more but the very best players were out of their reach until they were challenging for the title and qualifying for the Champions League.

Money helps, it's a shortcut, but it's not everything.

We have neither the CL nor money so we have to be patient. It could take a while yet. That's why I'm sceptical when people say Rodgers will be sacked if he doesn't make the top four this season. I think the owners know the constraints they're placing on him. If they weren't fully aware before (which I think they were), this summer must be making it crystal clear to them.
