Non-league side Kingstonian have launched an investigation after their goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey brawled on the terraces with opposition fans after a defeat to Bognor Regis.
The incident at the end of Monday night’s Ryman League Premier Division match, which was captured on video, saw Tolfrey climb over advertising hoardings and confront a supporter near the front of the stand, with other bystanders appearing to become involved.
It was not clear what sparked 27-year-old Tolfrey’s reaction at the Kingsmeadow Stadium in Kingston upon Thames.
A number of Bognor Regis supporters attempted to intervene before players from both teams and security officials also entered the stand in an attempt to halt the trouble.
Tolfrey was led away from the incident by Kingstonian team-mates.
Kingstonian said in a statement on Tuesday: “Following the events from last night’s Ryman League Premier Division match, Kingstonian Football Club is conducting a thorough investigation, while working closely alongside Bognor Regis Town FC, with whom we have an excellent relationship.”
The film of the incident also showed a row breaking out between players of the rivals teams at the end of the match. Police were also called to the stadium.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said the incident was being investigated, saying in a statement: “Police were called at 21.43 on Monday 23 February to Kingsmeadow Stadium, Jack Goodchild Way after reports of a fight between players and supporters. Officers made no arrest and there were no injuries and inquiries continue.”
