The former England defender Sol Campbell is considering joining the Conservative Party and believes he can have a major influence in securing “the black vote”.

Campbell, who retired in 2011 having won 73 caps for his country, said last week that he was thinking about joining the Conservative Party to fight Labour’s proposed introduction of mansion tax should they win the General Election next year.

However, speaking at the launch of his new biography at Cheltenham Literature Festival on Thursday, the former Tottenham and Arsenal defender admitted he is considering taking a more active role.

“[Let’s have] a conversation just to see where they want to go with things,” he said. “I think something has got to be offered for me to really think about it.

“I have got so much to offer. I think it is very important for the black vote. If the ‘black vote’ votes it will clearly push someone over the line. I am for getting people from my background to vote.

'Get rid of Gary Neville and get me in instead,' he said. 'I've done all the badges.'
Campbell went on: 'I'm doing my coaching badges with the Welsh FA. I am on the last year of the pro licence. Whether I'm going to use it straightaway I'm not too sure. Whether I can use it here I don't know.

'But the career I have had should warrant me getting a job.'

Campbell says if he doesn't get a job in England within a few years he will look abroad for a coaching post.

The ex-Arsenal and Tottenham centre back, who was at the festival to talk about a new authorised biography of his life and career, also said he believed that, as the best defender in the world at the peak of his career, he should have been England captain on more than just three occasions.

Racism is still a 'fundamental probem' in the sport which he believes affected his career.

'I had my colour to count against me,' he said. 'I should have captained my country more than three times. I was going toe-to-toe with Beckham and he got the captaincy.

'But I was getting better and better. I became one of the best defenders in the world and then the best defender in the world and captain of my domestic side.

Leandro Damião pulls own shirt in attempt to deceive referee in Brazil

                • Damião’s shameful act was ignored by officials

The Brazilian striker Leandro Damião has taken simulation to a whole new level by appearing to pull his own shirt in Criciuma’s 3-0 win over Santos in an attempt to deceive the referee.

The 25-year-old Santos forward, regularly linked with a move to Tottenham in recent years, attempted the shameful act at a free-kick for his side during their Brazilian Serie A defeat but fortunately, the referee was not duped by his chicanery.

His antics were picked up on Brazilian TV however, exposing Damião, who finished as the top scorer at the London 2012 Olympics, to widespread ridicule.

                  Hey guys,

Didn't know where else to put this... Was thinking of travelling out of Edinburgh to get to a Motherwell game as they are the only team nearby still in the SPL. The tickets are around 20 quid. Does anyone know if its worth the trouble of travelling out to the game and if the atmostphere will be good?

I am pretty happy to watch any level of football, I am more interested in enjoying some unique football atmospheres, so would consider a Hearts match if anyone thought that would be decent... Cheers!

Glad Lennon finally got a job at Bolton. Be interesting to see how well he does.

Might be good for us if he gets them challenging again, an opportunity to send some of our youngsters.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
