AC Milan and Inter Milan's San Siro 'can be demolished' for new 60,000 stadium, says Italy's heritage authority

The famous San Siro in Milan is set to be replaced by a new stadium after Italy's heritage authority raised no objections to its demolition.

AC Milan and Inter Milan share the venue, which was built in 1926.

Last year the clubs filed a request to jointly build a new 60,000-seater stadium next to the existing ground.

Although approval from heritage authorities is not the final decision, it is an important step towards implementing the plan.

According to an opinion from the authority to the Milan municipality which owns the site, the arena does not have any architectural significance that would prevent its demolition.

The San Siro has undergone several redevelopments and only a small remnant of the oldest part of the stadium remains.

City representatives, including Milan's mayor Giuseppe Sala, had repeatedly questioned plans to completely demolish the San Siro and the clubs have modified initial projects which would have seen the entire stadium destroyed.

Plans under discussion include replacing most of the old arena but retaining part of it as a landmark around which the clubs would build new sport facilities available to the public.
      Oh I don't know.

That's a shame, I think it probably makes the top 10 most iconic grounds in the world. Flew over it on the way to landing in Milan yewrs ago and just remember how awestruck I was. I was there on business for a few days the the guy in charge of looking after me asked if there was anything I wanted to see. I told him I'd love a tour of the San Siro and he said no before taking me up some mountain to eat boar pasta

It was a bit of a nothing place pre Italia '90 but the work they did on it for that made it look sensational. Very sad if it gets demolished.

Last game at Griffin Park this evening. The only English football ground to have a pub on each corner.

To be replaced with by the Brentford Community Stadium:

            Oh I don't know.

As far as lower league grounds go, that’s one of the nicer ones.

Although it might not be lower league anymore.

ignore the 1st minute (pointless); stop watching after 1:57 (even more pointless)

                    Impressive.

They have to be the model that all aspirational clubs should be looking to ape, they have definitely managed to transform themselves from a yo-yo club to a reasonable sized player in the PL. Just outside of the 'top clubs'.

That said, not enough for me to forgive the city for the beating I took outside de Montford SU back in my early 20's.
                    Modifying post.

The first images showing what Leeds United's Elland Road stadium could look like if expansion plans are given the go-ahead have been released.

Proposals to modernise and expand the ground, taking its capacity from 37,645 to about 56,500, were backed by Leeds City Council's executive board last week.

The club, which secured its return to the Premier League on Easter Monday, said the regenerated stadium would meet the demand for tickets, with 26,000 supporters currently on its season ticket waiting list.

By increasing capacity by nearly 20,000, Elland Road would become England's seventh-biggest football stadium, the council said

I like how that toilet seat inspired the colour of the stadium.
