Speedie played feck all games for us. My problem was that it was just so predictable. Usually I'm one of the ones who can see the potential good in any signing, how even against the odds maybe they will work out, but Mario... it was just never ever going to work because all he is is a concept, an illusion absolutely not based on the reality of watching him play.

I hate to point out that Joey Barton was right ever (guess the law of averages says it had to happen eventually)

I will be fair to Mario here. He did eventually buy into our ideas and was putting effort in and running around. So i am not totally sure it would be right to call him lazy.

However, it would be totally right to say that when we have the ball, he just doesn't cut the mustard. On average, he just has not made the correct runs or linked up with the others. He drops too deep to be considered an effective target for crosses and the sad fact is he just is not a very good footballer.

So when he does drop deep he offers nothing. Nor has he been very good at holding the ball up. He may get it and keep it. But then when it comes to passing it on we just go backwards as he makes the wrong pass or doesn't execute the right pass correctly.

It is a real shame. Because he can be a for e to be reckoned with, but one of two things has to happen. Either have a team built around him or he needs to change his game. The latter i think we all know now will never happen. The former will never happen at Anfield.

He needs to go. Join a lesser side and have the side playing to his strengths. Get his form & confidence back and go from there. Could yet sneak back into the Italian squad for the following summer.
