Don't think you could have ex-managers/players involved though. Too much chance of previous allegiances coming into play. Can you imagine Scholes or Wio being on VAR for one of our games

Really hard to make calls like the Bowen one or Odegaard one without having a decent knowledge of the game though as if you followed the rules 'by the book' they're both probably a foul - but we all know that's not really a foul....so maybe they need to rewrite the rules to give these VAR****s more of a clue on what the actual calls should be.

In theory, I like the system where they get the ref to go to the pitch side monitor and make the final call. All the responsibility is on the ref then, and no more talk about it was an error, or a clear error, or an obvious error, but we’re not overturning it because it was not a clear and obvious error.

However, the problem is, the ref has never (as far as I’m aware) stuck with his original decision when asked to review. My understanding is that var can still overrule the ref without asking him to check, if they think it’s clear and obvious, and asks him to check for one’s that are on the fence? It’d be interesting to see the stats of how many times the ref was asked to view himself and how many times he reversed the on field decision (I think every single one). If var wasn’t able to decide themselves you’d think these ones would be closer to 50/50 whether or not the ref is gonna stick with the original decision or change his mind.

I think the fact that they’re reversing their own on field decision every single time, goes hand in hand with the theory that they shouldn’t be reffing one day, and on var another day. The fact that they’re all colleagues and sympathetic to each others reputation or whatever, means they’re less likely to say “No you’re wrong, I’m sticking with my original decision”.

To sort this it just needs to be broadcast what the ref and VAR bloke are saying to each other like they do in rugby. I guarantee the amount of wrong calls would go down from day one.

At least if football approached it in this way we would understand WHY a referee had made a decision. This conversation should be public as it affects the people who need to understand it the most, the people that fund the game.

So the conversation is audible to TV viewers and commentators, but not to the fans in the ground. And the pictures are visible to all?

I think a good start would be making the pictures visible to the fans at the ground, so at least the fans are aware of what is going on and the referee can't hide behind that anonimity..
