I don't get this at all.

I think having more teams is good. And just about everyone has been poor so far apart from Italy, and maybe the Dutch. But particularly a lot of the more typically favoured teams.

I think mixing it up and giving some smaller countries like Wales or Macedonia, Scotland even, a chance is a good thing personally.

Let's see some upsets and some new faces in the knockout stages.

And then, who knows what might happen.

England do massively underachieve constantly. Player for player, there's enough quality in their squad to win the tournament. There is some laughable bias in their media when you see the likes of Neville and Ferdinand claim Italy and the Netherlands don't have any superstars players but they also strangely downplay the expectations and qualityw within their own nations squad.

Everyone's on about Kane and grealish but imo it's the lack of a consistent style and ultra conservative approach to games.

The majority of the starting XI play in sides that have been to many European finals recently, they play under the world's best coaches week in and week out and not because they're English but because they are judged by those coaches to be good enough.

They're used to dominating games every week and primarily having the lion's share of possession, spending most of their time in the opponents final third. Then they go to their national team and they play so cautiously with two 6s.

It boggles my mind that Rice and Phillips largely got away with any criticism last night. For me, they were the glaring problem in England's play, simply couldn't play forward or play fast passes to feet, dominated by the Scottish midfield.

All due respect to Scotland but there is no need for that england side to go against them with two holding midfielders, if you can't beat Scotland with that team having only one holding midfielder then you've got virtually nil chance of winning the tournament because you just won't be able to create enough chances and score enough to beat better sides.

They took the over enthusiastic plaudits against a poor Croatia with a narrow victory but they sat back in a 4-5-1 with 30 mins to go on a 1-0 lead. That sort of mentality will be punished by better teams.

Simultaneously you had pundits on English tv slam Spain for their draw with Sweden, a game where they absolutely destroyed Sweden in terms of possession, field position and chances but didn't take any. It's bizarre, all they need to do is finish better and they can easily win the tournament....england don't even have the balls to play a way that will create chances.

I don't think england will fulfill their potential until the FA set a clear style for how they want to play and get better managers. You can definitely win these tournaments on the counter like France or Portugal but the chances are higher if you seek to control/dominate the game.

All the classics world cups of our youth had the same format.

I'm fine with it.

Probably makes more sense to increase to 32 teams but with 16 in the knock out, we'll hopefully see some dark horses come out of the pack.
