As uncomfortable as it is to say, Maguire was also excellent.

Maguire, Walker and Shaw all had great tournaments. Sterling too. England are utter ****e to watch but they have a fantastic squad of young players... They just need a better manager imo to get the most out of that array of talent.

Italy were the best team throughout the tournament and the best team on the night. Also, you know things are bad when English players do more diving and play acting than Italy.

Nah not sure about that to be honest mate. I thought at one stage England were going to win it inside 25 mins - Kane dropped deep and found space really well - and Trippier was getting acres of space. They had them on the ropes.

Although to be fair, Italy had a good spell in 5 mins before half time - so england were probably happy to hear the half time whistle.

Also from a players perspective I can't understand why someone like Sterling (an experienced attacking player who is likely to be involved in such situations for club and Country) isn't getting help with taking pens (both practice and the mental/psychological side of things). As IMO at some point he is going to have to take one, even if 5 of his team mates step up he still might have to take one in sudden death
totally agree. Italy missed a peno first and all. It was there for the taking.

I was convinced that Sancho was going to miss his one. He looked nervous as **** - never really got into it.

When I saw Walker and Henderson being taken off I couldn't understand it to be honest. Two players who have played in huge games- champions league finals etc. Was nuts. And for Southgate to say how it was because they were good in training just compounded it.

To be fair to Maguire, he took some feckin peno!!!

England the better side in the first half and the requirements when you're winning so much different to trailing. Italy clearly on top for 35 mins in the second half and England coming back into it towards the end and ET.

I thought Southgate over stacked the squad with attacking mids and forwards and not enough CM's. They were crying out for another mid in place of Mount/Sterling all second half before the equaliser. Should have took Ward-Prowse rather than Ben White, even Milner would have been better.

Kane was ****ed and not pressing. What's the point in Calvert-Lewin or out of form Rashford?

The decision to put those young lads on pens was utter madness. Put that pressure on Henderson not a 19 year old.

Don't think Southgate has done a good job given what he's got to work with, two easy routes in tournaments and blown it. England should/could have beat everyone they've faced this tournament, just because his way has won up to now doesn't mean other ways would fail. The fashion in international football is to keep it tight and the odd goal going forward, England could have blown Italy out the water in that first 30 mins.

Needs to convert Maddison/Saka or someone of that ilk into a box to box midfielder before the World Cup

Sancho looked like a rabbit in the headlights, almost as much as the Italian guy who missed first, I thought he was going to throw up. But it was actually only Rashford that missed a penalty, the others were saved, which always has an element of bad luck re the keeper guessing correctly.

IMO trying one those stupid shuffle run-ups and having it saved is actually worse than missing.

Rashford did both i know, but if you go for power and then miss, at least you don't have the stigma of being a smart arse with egg on your face.

I am probably wrong here, but it's the defenders and less skilful players tend to do ok in high pressure penalty shoot outs. A lot of them go for power, pick a side and ****in whack it.

Maguire's peno last night was brilliant......i would have thought that Walker would have been able to do something similar

But the one that hit the woodwork had the stupidest shuffle run-up of the lot.

I’ve not watched a shoot out where it was so clear from the body language and facial expressions who was going to miss.

I hadn’t appreciated until this morning that the three guys who missed were all black and it is so depressing to see the way they have been treated with the usual barrage of racism online.

They are trying to stand for something more, this team, and it just shows that they are nowhere close to making a difference and they cannot do it alone.

The stats from last night are similar to when we beat Spurs after the early pen. 65% possession. 8 shots on target to our 3. A games stats is always skewed by an early goal
