REf was blocked from seeing how bad the challenge by players, nonetheless he was very quick to pull a yellow & maybe should have waited 10seconds to speak to the other officials.

Ok...it is bad, but slight mitigation in that he has kicked through the ball and connected with Mitoma on the follow thru. It's wild and uncontrolled, but not sure if there was intent to injure, just a desperate swipe at the ball that meant his foot was raised and made contact with the player.

he missed the ball completely with that swing, its the back foot that actually connected with the ball.

100% he was looking to leave something on Mitoma there - ball was on the ground and he could have easily just nicked the ball away without making that wild swing. There isn't any justification for his foot ending up where it did.
