What are peoples thoughts on the new refereeing guidelines?
1) Adding on more realistic added time.
I’m all for this. I think it was pretty good in the World Cup. It can be really frustrating when you’re chasing a game and there’s not the right amount of time added on. Will be interesting to see how it takes it’s toll on players fitness though, if they’re playing an extra 10 min or so each game. Early on, it might take players time to adapt, knowing how much juice to leave in the tank and there might be some late late winners due to tired legs and that. Also it might change managers substitute strategies- 75min might be the new 60min!
2) Booking players for time-wasting
I like the sound of this, but Trent’s yellow yesterday was a joke- and Nouri for wolves today booked for taking too long to take a throw in too. In both cases they weren’t taking excessively long to take it, and clearly weren’t trying to waste time, but just looking for the best option. Rashford crawled off the pitch when subbed tonight, but wasn’t booked. Were any keepers booked for taking too long with their kickouts? Feel like throw ins is a weird one to crack down on.
3) Booking players for complaining to the ref
I like the idea of this, but seen a few players booked for gesturing a yellow card. I don’t really get it, like how come you can gesture that it’s a handball and you should have a penalty but not gesture that the deliberate foul should be a booking. If you gesture that you got the ball, is that a yellow? Or if you gesture that the player dived? If the captain says to the ref “that’s a yellow”, is that also a booking, or only when a player makes a hand gesture? I think these ones should be reserved for when players surround the ref or go over the top throwing temper tantrums.
4) Booking managers for complaining about decisions
I think this one is nonsense. Of course there’s a line not to cross and no problem with them clamping down on it, but there was 4/5 managers/coaching staff booked this weekend I think? For throwing their hands up or something, after a decision goes against them. It’s a passionate sport, you can’t expect the manager to just sit there smiling, while they get denied a stone wall penalty, or whatever.
5) VAR looking to not overrule referees decision as much.
Didn’t realise this, but heard them saying it on sky there. I hate this one, just judge what the decision is, and no need to use language like “was it a clear and obvious error”. The irony is that by not overruling referees, they’re actually putting referees in an awkward position where their bad decisions will be highlighted more, cos they’re not being corrected. If Simon Hooper is told to look at that one on the screen tonight, there’s no way he doesn’t give a penalty. Still can’t believe our one yesterday too.
