    Blue Card

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/footbal....l-orange-card/

The measure would equate to an ‘orange card’ and see offences deemed worthy of greater punishment than a booking, but not quite meet the threshold of a sending-off, clamped down on.

Mark Bullingham, the Football Association chief executive and Ifab director, said: “When we’re looking at sin-bins, a protocol clearly has to be developed. The areas we were looking at were dissent, where it’s worked very, very well in the grassroots game in England.

“We’ve also spoken about other areas, particularly tactical fouls. I think frustration for fans when they’re watching games when they see a promising counter-attack that’s ruined by that, and the question of whether a yellow card is sufficient for that, has led to us looking at whether that should be involved in the protocol as well.

“So, the starting point was really looking at player behaviour and dissent but then looking at whether we should extend it into other areas such as tactical fouls as well.”

He added: “If that’s the way the protocol goes then, absolutely, you spend potentially 10 minutes off the pitch as well.

“Some players do commit a foul – I know people call it a tactical foul, cynical foul, professional foul – but a foul that prevents a promising attack and they do it consciously knowing they’re going to get a yellow card, and we think that really breaks up the game. So, would they not do it if they felt there was going to be a sin-bin? And that would be the question. I think with all of these things, success of sin-bins in grassroots game has been prevention, rather than cure. You get to a point where players know the threat of sin-bins and, therefore, don’t transgress. And we would hope that it would make the same change.”

Potentially good idea but will be ruined by officiating.

If they can’t get yellow cards or even red cards right half the time, I don’t expect they’ll have more luck with orange cards. And it will likely encourage the likes of Anthony Gordon to throw themselves to the ground all over the pitch, rather than just the attacking third.

100% that City would never get one for a tactical foul but their opponents would

It's alarming to hear that they believe 'tactical fouls' are more serious than standard yellows, yet let so many of them go unpunished.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

A tactical foul is worse than the assault by Pickford on VVD. The list is probably quite extensive

That's true as well, but what I meant is they want refs to start giving out orange cards for these offences, when most don't even have the balls to give yellows as is. That they think this is a serious enough offence to revolutionise the rules of the game, but it's a running joke that Fernandinho and Rodri regularly get/got away with about 5 a game. Why is this?

This is ****ing stupid. They cant get the basic **** right with video evidence. Maybe theybshould work on taht first before giving them more responsibility

Just make the orange card for diving. Easy. Maybe then people all over the world wouldnt mock the sport so much.

Disappointing. I'd much rather a firmer stance was taken on those deliberate 'take one for the team' fouls that gets a yellow because its 50 yards from goal. Would love to see that cynical cheating met with a red and 5 match ban.

Our players do that stuff too though.

We don't do it anywhere near enough. With our high line and so many balls played over the top, we have ample opportunity to do it every game, but very rarely do. I've called for our players to take the foul loads of times this year, but they usually don't.

Matip (or Konate) got away with one a few weeks ago that I thought should have been a second yellow and Trent could have seen red against Newcastle, but neither were clear cut.

I do think if this rule is introduced, then mobility and pace will be even more important in the DM role.

In principle I don't mind the idea of sin bins or orange cards, I think that there have been too many soft red cards this season and for me they are ruining games. My concern would be that it brings another level of complication to refereeing the game and the ref's are cocking up enough as it is. Also suggestions seem to be just using them for tactical fouls, while that is an issue I feel there are bigger issues in the game and officiating that I would rather see sorted out first.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Aye, it will be very hard to police. I used the Trent example earlier, player was past him, put arm on shoulder and player went down easy. That an orange? That the same as a player about to break clear and cynically pulled back?

They'll go nuts for the first couple of weeks with it and then it'll settle back down.

To me it just feels like a distraction from the appalling level of officiating that needs to be improved but rather than do that move focus onto something else.

A dumb question but who keeps a check on the time and what is it in reference to? 10 mins on the game clock sounds OK, but the team temporarily down to 10 men will be time wasting, also if there is a VAR check in there that's a couple of mins where the clock is running down but the game isn't happening. In ice hockey the clock is stopped when there is a break in play and the sin bin/power play follows the game clock, football doesn’t have that. Presumably the 4th official keeps time but does stuff get added on for time wasting or delays? Also players need the refs permission to enter and exit the field, do they need to wait for a referee's signal to come back on, or do they wait for a stoppage in play?
