Never a pen in a million years. Agree, and even most diehard English pundits said the same. We may as well remove defenders and just let forwards have free rein once they enter the box. They already have to ridiculously run about with their hands at their sides - what next, on their knees so their feet don’t get in the way? Kane has already got his shot away and over the bar he follows through at full velocity hitting the defenders boot. He then stays down as if he has been hobbled. You could as easily argue it’s a free kick to the defender for Kane kicking him - but the narrative is set up to protect the attacker.

‘Harry Kane violently attacks defender after shot flies miles over bar’Originally posted by Kenneth View PostI’d like to hear that. Do it, watch the side on replay and make the cases for a Kane foul on the defender.

Looks impressive on paper, and yet it’s been mostly unconvincing on the pitch.Originally posted by spud_gun View PostSo two finals, one semi final and a quarter final in the last 4 major tournaments yet a large portion of their fans don't rate the manager.
The mind boggles
When you look at the squad, that’s the kind of record they should be capable of achieving. But they’ve bungled their way through, particularly in this Euros, despite favourable draws.
A tactically mediocre manager getting the minimum out of a talented squad imo..

You might not like what you're seeing on the pitch but it's very effective.Originally posted by Mark79 View PostLooks impressive on paper, and yet it’s been mostly unconvincing on the pitch.

You've had far better players under far better managers who've achieved a whole lot less than Southgate has for England.
You think Portugal fans in 2016 or Greece fans in 2004 cared about the on pitch product given their respective end results.

So I think the ‘any contact with the hand’ thing is only relevant in the build up to a goal, and a penalty wouldn’t count. It certainly wasn’t a regular handball offence.Originally posted by Scratch View PostRegarding the pen, does the ball strike Saka's hand just before Kane shoots? If it does, should that have been considered by VAR as well?Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years

But what I’m saying is that while it appears to be effective, I don’t think it’s been achieved by design by anything that the manger has implemented, at least tactically. More that they’ve scraped and stumbled their way through.
Of course ultimately England fans won’t care if they win. But the merits of Southgate’s ability can be still be based by the performances as much as the results..

their squad depth and their starting line up is far superior to any side in the competition. That was the first game they played anything close to well and they still had to rely on a last min goals vs a bang average Dutch side & the guy he brought on that scored should have been starting a few games ago aswell. They have got so lucky with the draw, Spain have already played Italy, Croatia, Germany & France ffs.
The quality and standard of international football in general is poor imo.

Don't think it is to be fair.
It SHOULD be, but the players Southgate picks for certain positions ensures it is not.
Kane is a statue and Trippier should be nowhere near the team imo.
If they want an attacker in that LWB slot they could go with Gordon and if they want a more defensive player there, but also have real pace, they could play Gomez.
Up front it should be Watkins or maybe Toney. Either way you get proper mobility and physicality.
And in a formation like the one England started with last night, Palmer might be far more effective than Foden.
Still think they will beat Spain though and after that Southgate, and the rest of us, will get a much deserved reward when Tugs Hard gets the sack before Xmas
