Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew, 55, would expect £5m in compensation if he is sacked, after he signed a contract until 2020 with the club in the summer. (Times - subscription required)

It really is a gravy train that rewards failure.

Unbelievable. Didn't Pardew also just have a massive contract at Newcastle?

Cant believe he's still there. He must be big mates with that Parish fella. They've won something stupid like 5 in about 34 league games, lost 6 in a row conceding 18 in that time, he can barely do any worse.

Football clubs are so scared of someone doing well and being pipped from them its untrue, Pardew's track record didn't merit a contract until 2020 These managers who are sacked every few years for huge payouts only to walk into another lucrative contract are hardly going to be motivated are they? Give them a 1/2 year deal with an extension granted upon competition of objectives or yearly reviews. That could hinder the development of younger players but clauses are easily inserted, if youth development is important to a club, why not allow for reduced immediate expectations if a manager is including players u21 regularly in their match day squads.

Dream world I know but I've always detested the circle of failed English managers being recycled around the leagues.

Totally agree. I don't get what clubs have to lose by offering shorter contracts. The only winners are the managers as they have no incentive to do well. 2020 and £5m compensation. If us in the real world get sacked we get **** all.

The same managers that for the most have proven themselves to be much of a muchness for over a decade?

The typical British manager who does well is usually doing so based on a really good situation at a club. When it comes to a sustained period the vast majority drop off and fall back to their level and often have no identity or legacy left behind. Pulis for example is an exception, he usually has a pretty solid level, gets you to a certain point (mid table) and its difficult to judge if its his style or the clubs finances that are the problem with kicking on. Once he is moved on or leaves the club is usually set for a short period of time in terms of defensive structure.

The likes of Pardew have been in the game long enough to take a look at his track record, he seems to inject an initial reaction into a club and they go on a good run. However it never lasts, once the honeymoon period is over his teams are found out, he goes on ridiculously poor runs of form and concedes goals for fun.

I'd argue, in his case especially a short term contract would be ideal for a club.
