I don't understand why more players don't go for the top corners, where the keeper has no chance of saving it.

There's obviously more chance of hitting it over the bar but top half of the goal gives the keeper almost no chance.

The other thing I hate it pens that go straight down the middle with hardly any pace, one was saved by the keepers legs there and Modric was lucky that Schmeichel didn't save his

Air of calm settled when it was Rakatic that stepped up - it was like we'd all forgotten that he had to take one. Love the Croatian keeper. I want him instead of Allison or Ter Stegen. It's crazy how before the tournament everyone was playing down England's chances, and ok they have put in a couple of decent (but not outstanding) performances against Tunisia and Panama and lost a dead rubber to Belgium, but with the draw suddenly half the country are already expecting them to make the semi-finals at least.

I don't like the ones that just try and out smart the keeper by stopping and I think that since that became common the quality of penalties has gone down.

Ultimately, pens are harder than they look.

You go for a corner and hope the keeper goes the wrong way, if he guesses right and you haven't hit it well it is probably going to be saved.

Or you go down the middle and hope he dives. Plus unless you never take them you know the keeper now knows which way you like to take them, and where you have successes so you need to mix it up a bit.
