Rafa: I made a promise to Jerzy.

Rafael Benitez explained the reason Jerzy Dudek replaced Pepe Reina in goal against Arsenal was down to a promise he made the Pole at the start of the season.
The Liverpool manager told Dudek he would start in the domestic cup games for Liverpool this season. The Istanbul hero missed the Carling Cup 3rd round win over Reading due to suspension but played in the 4th round win at Birmingham.

"At the start of the season I told Jerzy that Pepe was the number one goalkeeper but I made a promise to him that he would play in the Carling Cup and FA Cup. Once you make a promise you don't go back on your word.

"I thought he did okay against Arsenal and he didn't really have a lot to do besides the goals."

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I wonder who'll start in the Carling Cup then?

And the tea pots Jibber Jabber Joo.
    On the Nong Ning Nang

So I presume Dudek will be in goal for Carling Cup game?

Promise or no promise, this is Liverpool Football Club. You don't play Dudek against Arsenal if you have Reina. Simple as that. Rafa should know that getting to the 4th round was a primary mission, not giving Dudek a chance to shine (and he didn't), because he promised him.

****ing hell Rafa, stop promising! I wonder if Salif Diao would play in the Champions' League final if Rafa promised him. **** Gerrard or Xabi, I promised Salif. God damn. Club and results come first.

PS: I don't say that Dudek is a bad GK, but he has a very, very, very (!!!) bad score against Arsenal, especially against Henry himself... And playing him in goal was just asking for trouble.

It's a tad unfair to single a player out when the team has lost, but IMO Dudek is deserving of it in this case. All three of those goals were saveable.

If he starts on Tuesday, there is no justice in this world.

I have to say I agree I thought he could've saved at least 2 and I feel Pepe most definitely would've stopped them.
The first one is debatable you could maybe ask about his positioning but it was well executed.

I think it's a bit harsh to blame Dudek for the Henry goal too. Henry was about ten yards from the line when he shot. Yes, the ball went close to Dudek but you can't say he should have saved it IMO. Also, you could try to blame Agger for allowing Henry to turn inside and get it on his right foot but he's a world class player, closing in on goal, Agger was in an extremely difficult position so holding him responsible would also be unfair.

If anyone's to blame for the goal it's Carra.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I dont think Rafa would have made that promise if he didnt beleive Jerzy was good enough to start

What a ****ing joke. We pay good money to watch the team and this happens. What if next year's 'promise' is to start Pennant every game?

                  Heaven forbid.

I agree, this is on Rafa.

Dudek was clearly not up for this. Rafa should have broken his promise.

Being smart now is easy though.

Well, I do think Pennant is improving a bit. His crosses aren't so bad like they were at the start of the season. Plus, I think he's linking with other players quite well.

Pennant bashing started because we expected too much, I guess. He was the best passer in Birmingham when he came to us. However, he still needs to prove himself.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but I think Aurelio put in magnificent crosses yesterday. They were outstanding IMO.

You're right about the benefit of hindsight but I don't agree with your other points. Why did Rafa make the promise? Maybe it was to stop Dudek moving in the summer or this January, leaving him with a back-up goalkeeping problem. I can't think of any team where the back-up is as good as the first choice (unless the first choice keeper is sub-par too). We know Dudek isn't as good as Reina, that's why Reina is first choice.

However, if Rafa had broken his promise it could have been enormously damaging. First Dudek might be off or at least cause problems within the squad. Second, next time Rafa says something to a player his words will carry no credibility - if he broke his word once, he might do it again.

We're all looking for a scapegoat for yesterday. There's no shortage of suggestions, maybe that should tell us something and remind us that football is a team game. Lots of people, from the manager down, have to bear some responsibility but all that happened in the end was that we lost a single game, important yes, fairly but still it's just one match.

Being the best passer in a relegated BCFC team was never gonna make him a world beater, he is getting better and given a little patience and time he make become a good player for us. What frustrates me is these pages are mirrored at the games as he is getting stick from the stands also, and that can break a young player.
