    No Alves then?

'Liverpool are set to sign Deportivo La Coruna right-back Alvaro Arbeloa, according to the Primera Liga side.'

If the above snippet is true, where does that leave Alves? I assume we won't be attempting to sign him in the Summer?

Alves was never going to sign in January and is set to play right wing not right back.

I think Rafa would play Alves in midfield mostly anyways.

Mate, we aren't going to spend £15million or whatever with a take over pending. Come on...

I don't think £15m would be any problem in the summer if Rafa wants him.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Also, Alves is hardly likely to leave Sevilla in January, is he?

And also, for all we know, Arbeola is about as good as Josemi with both his legs broken.

I think Arbeloa is being bought to give cover all across the backline, if you look in the other thread you will see he has played CB and even left wing back before.

Did you think that Neill signing would have meant that we would no longer be interested in Alves, because if so I don't see what has changed.

To be honest I think that Alves may be out of our reach but I still expect us to bid for him in the summer.

No one really knows how much Rafa will get to spend in the summer after the takeover.

If the sheikh want to make us the best then Rafa will get Alves if he still want him.

Obviously we aren't going to try and sign him in Jan.

I just wondered whether this signing would preclude a move for Alves at the end of season.

But it would seem that you guys think not, which is just fine by me

I think it is more a case of would he want to leave Spain now that Sevilla are successful?

I'm sure people will say he would do it for money but a/ it is unlikely that DIC (an investment firm) are going to pay Chelsea like wages and b/ how many players from Spain and Italy have we heard over the years are bopund to come to England but never arrive, or come to get a final pay packet. Sometimes the good weather and lifestyle are worth more than the money.

I imagine Rafa will go for Alves in the summer again. However, I think that while we'll have a little more scope moneywise, we will not allow ourselves to be ripped off like Chelsea were.

I would think we'll bid a sensible amount for the player (bearing in mind he's signed a contract extension and I think his value's gone up a bit too given his successful season so far) and we'll have a couple of extra mil in hand to try to secure the deal. But if Sevilla start f*****g about and taking the p*ss, we'll walk away and find someone else.
No! I am NOT in denial!

This just seems a backup to the ambitious Lucas Niel not comming to us.

Just hope he's not here for the money

I'm sure this kid has a lot more hunger than Lucas Neill. Granted, that is not saying much

When does Finnan turn 31? As well as he’s been doing, time isn’t on his side.
