This has taken off again today:

        Moyes blasts critical Benitez

David Moyes has voiced his disapproval at Rafael Benitez for calling Everton a 'small club' after their Merseyside derby draw.

The two sides drew 0-0 at Anfield on Saturday and Benitez was quoted as referring to his fierce rivals as a less significant club - three times in one onterview!

And Moyes has slammed his counterpart for failing to show any respect or 'humility'.

"I'd be disappointed if Rafa had called Everton a small club," he told The Sun.

"I think if he were managing Everton, he would have tried to do a similar job here.

"It would be nice for these managers to show a bit of humility. I would never criticise the opposition. It's not the right way to do things."

Furthermore, the Toffees boss taunted Benitez by emphasising that his side have taken four points from their last two meetings, despite investing less significantly in the transfer market.

"We came here and matched a football club that has spent an awful lot of money in building their side. We also did it four months ago at Goodison Park.

"There's a difference of about £100million in spending between the two clubs and we have not done badly against them."

And the fiery Scot insists Everton are in fact one of the more established clubs in the Premiership.

"Everton are not a small team. Everton are one of the big clubs in England.

"We are, at this time, smaller than Liverpool, but we are a competitive football club, a determined football club, and we are trying to achieve as much as we can."

Benitez, however, has tried to justify his comments by claiming that they were based on the fact that Everton are not considered part of the 'Big Four'.

"It's easy for me to explain what I've said," he declared.

"We are in a position where we are trying to compete with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, while for other teams and managers that's more difficult.

"The top four are considered the biggest clubs in the Premiership, and even managers from other teams accept it's different for them when they play against the bigger teams.

        "That's what I was saying."

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has defended the remarks he made about Everton being a 'small club' following the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Benitez's comments caused outrage on Merseyside following the goalless draw at Anfield.

Everton boss David Moyes revealed his disappointment at Benitez's comments and the club issued a statement slamming the Spaniard's reaction.

However, Benitez insists the comments were not meant to upset Everton, but were made rather in defence of his own side.

"It's easy for me to explain what I've said," Benitez told the Liverpool Echo.

"I've read lots of comments from Bill Shankly over the years where he's made comments which compared Liverpool as a club to other teams. I've done it on this occasion.

"I'm the manager of Liverpool and I was simply comparing our club to most other clubs who come to Anfield.

"We are in a position where we are trying to compete with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, while for other teams and managers that's more difficult.

"The top four are considered the biggest clubs in the Premiership, and even managers from other teams accept it's different for them when they play against the bigger teams. That's what I was saying.

"We have been on a good run and it's always a pity when you don't win at home, particularly against your local rivals."

Benitez was also in the dark about reports suggesting that he could be handed a massive transfer kitty should American duo George Gillett Jnr and Tom Hicks complete their proposed takeover of the club.

"I've not been told this," added Benitez. "Maybe I will be meeting the new people this week, but my idea is the same. If we have money it will be better.

"If not, we will continue working as we have been. As I've said before, it's not all about money when you are running a successful club."

I think this is getting out of hand. Sky News have had a whole section on it, plus interviews with those big stars Lee Carsley (can anyone understand what he is saying?) and Tim Cahill who actually said "we're obviously bigger cause we've got 4 points "

The point of the matter is that even if they were a big club, they are smaller than Liverpool. To quote their manager "There is no doubt we are in the shadow of Liverpool". Right, so Rafa was right then - shut the **** up already!

They interviewed some guy in the street who didn't even seem to be a football fan , he said "Everton aren't that small, but they are definitely a lot smaller than Liverpool, but I don't think Benitez should have actually said it"

So it's ok as long as no one says it?

Even these deluded bluenose tw@ts should be embarrassed at that comment.

Rafa must be sitting at home laughing his head off thinking not only are they small, but petty as well.

Take nothing away from David Moyes’s determined warriors because they deserved their point and could easily have pickpocketed a victory from a contest they largely controlled by making Liverpool play in front of them
