Hehehe i've been spoiling for a proper battle all day... i'm sure i'll get a proper rise here. Giggle.
No chance of a rise over something so clear cut. Goalscoring might not be the most important facet of their games, but it's clearly important. Alonso contributes (although he should do more) in this area, Carrick doesn't.

Alonso is better tackler - a stat backed up by last season's 'tackling' stats.

He's also clearly a much better passer of the ball.

In terms of 'pace and mobility' there's little in it. Carrick is as one-paced as Xabi.

It's a total, TOTAL no contest.

All very well. But Javier will replace Alonso in the team though?

Why should there be a definitive 'replace'? They'll both play lots of games, and I imagine many of them in tandem (4-2-3-1).

There might be problems though if you have Javier,Xabi,Momo and Stevie all looking to play every game.

yes they would just as they are doing now, alonso wins far more balls than carrick so he's better defensively, he's got better passes so he's a better playmaker, and as stated above he scores more goals (not that he scores enough, he should score more imo)...

imagine if Xabi had to set up for ronaldo and rooney, he'd have a field day, xabi in our team with better wingers and better strikers is hands down the best in his role, wich is distibuting and creating play...

I actually think that Mascherano, if he ever signs officialy, will play at the expense of Momo.

Actually i seriously disagree with that formation, but forget that.

Just read the Mascherano BBC news article where he was quoted as saying, "have no rancour". Now i'm in love with his quick grasp of English... this boy is destined for greatness!

There'll be no problem in getting three of them into the side at once. Obviously, at no time will we field all four.

Well, I think Momo will be the one to "suffer" the most in terms of playing slightly fewer games.

                      He'll still play plenty though.

                        He's a tailor-made Alonso-style player though, from what i've seen of him.

Momo is the hardest working player we have... i don't need any stats to see that. Consistent as well... the defense must love him in the team.

don't believe he will, reckon he'll play beside him, reckon momo will be the one benched

I agree that he's our hardest working player but he needs to work on his distribution. He would still play plenty of matches though.

I'd argue that the return of scholes and the upturn of form of ronaldo have had FAR more to do with them winning the title than carrick.
