It's not the best deal, and I'm surprised the Yanks are letting it happen. Lived over there for the last 8 years, and even in a very socially liberal area I heard murmurs of discontent from some parents when I wore teh shirt to coach in. They thought I was promoting beer to their kids. No question it holds back marketing outside of Europe. And Carlsberg is such crap.

Noooooooooo, no, no, no & no again.

Please tell me this is not true.

Not a alchoholic drink and not at them rates, both are ****, and this is a **** deal all round.

Surely this is a wind up to get others interested?

Depends, I'm teetotal, hate the stuff and detest shirts advertising it.

Alcohol is not all embracing to all fans of all ages around the world.

And it's a crap deal in comparison.

My only problem is that, as shaggy said, it does limit our marketing potential, especially in certain muslim regions where alcohol is frowned upon. I'm all for a new sponsor, simply for the sake of change, but the money isn't really that important enough to bring people down.
I think we have a right to moan - our new deal is almost 3 times bigger than our last rushed and short (2 years) Carlsberg deal when we had no one else lined up (WHY???) but is only marginally better than our 3 year deal with Carlsberg all the way back in 2001 which was £5m a year. It's a poor deal - if true.

Agree with you there...I used to buy the shirts and own quite a few but the older i have gotten the more I have not liked it, because I dont want to be wearing something which has an alcoholic brand on it and so I wear the replica shirt less often now. I have stopped buying the shirts as a result.

Its a shame as I want to wear the shirt of the club I support, but even some of the associated branded clothing have Carlsberg written on it such as polo shirts and t-shirts. Its results in me spending less and less each year which is a shame, as the club gets less of my money and I dont get to wear the gear

The deal is the best so far but there has been a lack of foresight here by the club. The only way our worldwide turnover will increase is by making changes such as this.

Fans complain about us previously not being able to generate the turnover like some of our rivals can, this is an area where we could seriously increase turnover given the right branding.

What if Carlsberg had offered £70M over 3 years? Would that be acceptable or is it just the fact its alcohol?

For me its just the fact its alcohol related...nothing to do with money

If a non alcohol related brand paid less for the shirt sponsorship I reckon that the club would get more than the difference paid through increased shirt sales.

fair enough. I guess not being teetotal or a muslim I hadn't realised how strongly this affects people.

But almost everything could be considered offensive to some people. AIG are an american company which would upset a few, mansion is of course gambling, arab emirates are well arabs...the list can go on & on. Shef Wed used to have chuba chups which I struggle to get the wrapper off so I would object strongly to them.
