I realise that, but Chelsea played either formation with the same players, hence my original comment about Chelsea formation (Anyway, I don't want to spend another hour arguing like retards )

re. Gerrard on the right - I'm sure he'll pop up there, particularly when we want to be a little more compact, but the reason we got Pennant was so we didn't have to so much.

        Chelsea have NEVER played 4231.

Ratings for last night - for what it's worth!

          Reina

          7. Could have nipped to the pub and had a pint, he had that little to do. At no fault for the goal and made a terrific last gasp save to deny an undeserved equaliser - and as Ryan pointed out, he sure did enjoy that!

          Finnan

          7. Another solid game from Mister Consistancy, good understanding developing with Pennant already, made a few good crossers and generally snuffed out any attacks. Had one mad moment in the second half when he couldn't get the ball under control in our penalty box, but other than that he was composed and used the ball well.

          Carragher

          7. Even had a shot on goal! Carragher was his usual self and didn't stand a chance for their goal, he is obviously the 'captain' of the defence, as on numerous occasions you could hear his distinctive voice screaming at the players! Does a great job at organising the tight line.

          Hyypia

6.5. Didn't have much to do and other than being caught slightly flat-footed for the goal, it wasn't his fault. Didn't make his presence felt in the opponents penalty area for corners, when we should be looking to him to be our main aerial threat.

          Riise

          5. Normally a fan of Riise and thought he was an integral part of the defence last year. Not a very good performance last night and got caught out by their right midfielder on several occasions - the weakest link in the defence. Great shot in the first half that really zipped off the turf.

          Pennant

          8. Great debut for him, did pretty much everything that was required - hugged the touchline, linked well with Finnan, and varied his crosses very well. Didn't attack the fullback too many times though, and needs to get used to our style of play, as on occasion he should have made a run into the centre when Bellamy peeled off to the right - however this will improve as they play more games. Very Pleasing.

          Sissoko

7.5. Very good game and very unlucky at being booked. You could tell B(r)occoli was getting mad at him. He covered a huge amount of the pitch, fit an excellent shot for the first goal, and generally governed the midfield. (A couple of instances of the famed 50p head also happened, but I will forget about that )

          Alonso

          7. Got caught out a few times, but generally his cross-field passing was fantastic. He really does appear to be the player that Benitez builds his team around. Did the breaking up of play well last night too. It's just a pity that he doesn't have a change of pace, but that is knit-picking!

          Zenden

          3. Worst player on the pitch for us, by a long way. Gave the ball away on countless occasions, and did very little with the ball. He is not a solution to the LM position, and should only be considered as fourth choice CM. Should have been subbed sooner. His game in a nut-shell was when he stopped us having a corner in the first half by trying to control the ball, and instead gave them a throw-in! Terrible game.

          Gerrard

          6. For his standards pretty poor. Still looks like he's in pre-season and I don't think shifting him around the pitch does anybody any favours. Still, more than likely he'll have a stormer on Sunday!

          Bellamy

          7. Good debut from the Welsh striker, converted an easily missable chance and was generally a thorn in their side all night. Made some intelligent runs to the wings and with better understanding from others around him might have caused the opposition all kinds of problems. Good start to his LFC career.

          Subs

          Luis Garcia

          7. Real live-wire when he came on, again showing all of us, why he is rated so highly by Rafa. Excellent close control on several occasions, and almost earned us a penalty after some amazing balance and determination took him past three players. Probably should have started the game on the left and looked to support Bellamy, when Bellamy made his runs onto the wing.

          Crouch

          5. Pretty poor control from our Petey, and seemed to lack the confidence he showed only days ago. He still caused their defence to panic, without hurting them directly. Was indirectly involved in the goal and should take some credit for that. He needs double training on his heading!

          Gonzalez

          6. Barely had a chance to show us anything. However, he showed great composure to stroke the ball home for the winner. Let's hope he gets used the rough and tumble of the premiership and delivers on his promise.

Reina: 6/10 - Was freezing to death in the 2nd half at the kop end, but made a vital save towards the end.
Finnan: 6/10 - Was constantly running down the right flank and then returning to his right-back position.
Carragher: 7/10 - Solid performance and great shot at goal.
Hyypiä: 6/10 - Though responsible for Maccabi goal, he did a good job at the back
Riise: 6/10 - Performed well, although he had some problems with Maccabi's right winger
Pennant: 9/10 - To me, Pennant is the first right right winger since Macca. Was amazing yesterday and he deserves a great rating. No doubt!
Sissoko: 9/10 - Immense! His passing ability really improved, so did his dribbling. He's really becoming a world-class player! The best signing Rafa made for Liverpool, IMO. + he almost killed the Maccabi player (ofcourse he dived) with a gentle touch...
Alonso: 6/10 - Was invisible throughout the game, but did create a pass for the 2nd Liverpool goal.
Gerrard: 7/10 - Was playing everywhere, except his best position. I've seen Stevie play better though...
Zenden: 5/10 - The worst LFC player on the pitch. He gave balls away too many times...
Bellamy: 8/10 - Great goal. He's gonna be a big hit at Anfield, IMO.

Garcia: 7/10 - Dribbling his way through the Maccabi defence... But I didn't like his dive in the penalty area. I think Rafa wasn't happy about that either
Crouch: 5/10 - He created some kaos in Maccabi defence, but he needs to add power to his headers!
Gonzalez: 8/10 - Great goal! He's becoming my cult hero

bit harsh on Bolo given he's been out for 10 months. Riise was gash and proved to everyone that he is a ****e left back, worst player on the pitch, that tidy congalese fella had him for breakfast - get fit soon Fabio.

Riise was excellent at LB last season mate. To say he's ****e is doing him a grave dis-service. He didn't play well last night - in fact he was poor - but your comments are very much wide of the mark.

I'm sorry but why the ****ing disrespect to our players from the ussual suspects?.
Crouchie came on, no he wasnt perfect and yes i shouted at the tv so much i had a sore throat afterwards but he changed the game and scared the **** out of their defence. He missed chances when it looked easier to score but he played a HUGE role in speedys goal. If he didnt have players surrounding him because they were intimidated becasue of his height, Speedy wouldnt of had the space to run onto the Xabis cross and thus scoring the goal (12m goal anyone?) So whilst you lot slag Crouchie to bits, just remember, if we get through then it would have been partly down to Crouchie. He brings to the team a hell of a lot more than just scoring and last night proved it. And as for the constant childish name calling of Bolo, Grow the **** up.

I cant actually get my head around to the fact that 1 year on and the Houllier Brigade are still slagging Crouchie to pieces. Call yourselves fans? you wouldnt last 2 minutes on the Kop.
