    Blackburn after Bellamy?

No quotes or anything, but The Independent reckons Blackburn will try to take Bellamy back to Ewood......

Hughes set to offer Bellamy an escape route from Anfield

The Blackburn Rovers manager, Mark Hughes, is ready to offer Craig Bellamy a summer escape route from Liverpool following his latest off-field altercation.

The Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez, is considering throwing the 27-year-old out of the club at the end of the season after he allegedly attacked his team-mate John Arne Riise with a golf club during a training break in Portugal last week.

Bellamy, whose career at Newcastle United ended after a series of rows with the then manager Graeme Souness, is expected to fly to Barcelona with the rest of the Liverpool squad this morning ahead of tomorrow's Champions League game at the Nou Camp - which will be watched by the club's new owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks. But the Wales striker faces a summer exit from Anfield after the incident with Riise - and he could be heading straight back to Blackburn.

Hughes was forced to offload Bellamy to Liverpool last summer when Benitez triggered an escape clause in his contract by offering £6m, but despite Bellamy's determination to sign for the side he supported as a boy, Hughes remains a huge fan of the controversial player. And he has made it clear to the Rovers board that he wants to be at the front of the queue for Bellamy if Benitez decides to show him the door.

Bellamy's form for Liverpool, with just eight goals in 31 games, has disappointed Benitez, though his electric pace could be a key factor against Barcelona, and he is likely to be given the chance to prove a point tomorrow night. But in the long term he could have an uphill battle to save his Liverpool career and he may be forced to return to Blackburn in order to secure a Premiership lifeline.

It has also been suggested that the Bellamy incident was leaked to take the heat off other players, a number of whom are thought to have breached a curfew. The Liverpool Echo yesterday quoted "an Anfield source" as saying the information "was designed to kill Bellamy's Liverpool career".

The Welshman received support yesterday, meanwhile, from a manager whose own playing career was not without the occasional flashpoint.

"Footballers are human beings, they make mistakes," the Sunderland manager Roy Keane said. "A lot of stuff anyway is blown out of all proportion. I take it with a pinch of salt."

I didn't rate Bellamy when we signed him, and he's shown very little to change my mind.

On his day, away from home against midtable sides, he's a dangerous little player.

But we need more than that, specifically, we need more than a 10-12 goal a season striker.

    I'd sell for 8m.

He's going noewhere, wishful thinking on my behalf maybe cos i'm a big admirer of Bellamy.
Would be surprised if Rafa got rid to be honest despite all these reports in the last couple of days.

I thought we needed better when we signed him and, 8 goals in 31 appearances later, I still think we need better.

Even at the top of his game for Newcastle, most Toon fans would've told you he misses far too many straightforward chances.

I'd be prepared to give him a second season, but he'd need to step up markedly on this season's performances.

              Well said

This has all been ****e that will blow over next week i dont think Bellemy is the one to be worried Crouchy has more to worry about. Bellemy seem the fall guy, they were all drunk and acted the eejits. End of the story the next day for the players inside the squad but this has been blown out by the media and amplified

I think he could be suitable back up for a better striker but I don't think he should be a guaranteed stater for us. At the moment I'd say keep him and let him try to prove the doubters wrong.

How on earth did you come to that conclusion ?

Crouch had a very average season last year, but this season he's been significantly better, scoring 13 goals already, (he'll end up with 15+) and generally acting as our most dangerous striker. He's our top scorer!

Besides, Crouch hasn't been involved in any late night drinking/golf club attacks either.

Crouch's position in the squad is much, much safer that that of Bellamy, in my opinion.

Not that i'm necessarily disagreeing with you two, but out of interest, seeing as you both have mentioned goals and posted specific numbgers, what kind of goal tally would you be looking for, in order to say he's good enough to stay?

Not to mention, Crouch has achieved all that without even being a regular in the 1st team.

It's not as black and white as living up to a specific number of goals, is it...but you'd have to say we'd require him to be scoring significantly more than ten goals a season. He doesn't even have a ratio of one in three, and that's not good enough for a Liverpool striker who plays regularly.
