No quotes or anything, but The Independent reckons Blackburn will try to take Bellamy back to Ewood......
Hughes set to offer Bellamy an escape route from Anfield
The Blackburn Rovers manager, Mark Hughes, is ready to offer Craig Bellamy a summer escape route from Liverpool following his latest off-field altercation.
The Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez, is considering throwing the 27-year-old out of the club at the end of the season after he allegedly attacked his team-mate John Arne Riise with a golf club during a training break in Portugal last week.
Bellamy, whose career at Newcastle United ended after a series of rows with the then manager Graeme Souness, is expected to fly to Barcelona with the rest of the Liverpool squad this morning ahead of tomorrow's Champions League game at the Nou Camp - which will be watched by the club's new owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks. But the Wales striker faces a summer exit from Anfield after the incident with Riise - and he could be heading straight back to Blackburn.
Hughes was forced to offload Bellamy to Liverpool last summer when Benitez triggered an escape clause in his contract by offering £6m, but despite Bellamy's determination to sign for the side he supported as a boy, Hughes remains a huge fan of the controversial player. And he has made it clear to the Rovers board that he wants to be at the front of the queue for Bellamy if Benitez decides to show him the door.
Bellamy's form for Liverpool, with just eight goals in 31 games, has disappointed Benitez, though his electric pace could be a key factor against Barcelona, and he is likely to be given the chance to prove a point tomorrow night. But in the long term he could have an uphill battle to save his Liverpool career and he may be forced to return to Blackburn in order to secure a Premiership lifeline.
It has also been suggested that the Bellamy incident was leaked to take the heat off other players, a number of whom are thought to have breached a curfew. The Liverpool Echo yesterday quoted "an Anfield source" as saying the information "was designed to kill Bellamy's Liverpool career".
The Welshman received support yesterday, meanwhile, from a manager whose own playing career was not without the occasional flashpoint.
"Footballers are human beings, they make mistakes," the Sunderland manager Roy Keane said. "A lot of stuff anyway is blown out of all proportion. I take it with a pinch of salt."
