I would have thought Rafa prefers a formation more like 4-2-3-1 rahter than 4-4-2. infact im almost possitive.
4-4-2 leaves too much space infront of the back 4 and infront of the midfield 4, Rafa likes balanced teams, who can plug the gaps, keeping the team compact.

We will find out this season.....and as per his interview about working on formations....i believe he willuse many different formations this year.

We played 4-2-3-1 for a while on Wednesday only Bellamy prefers to run the line rather than stand and act as a pivot so it all went a bit to cock.

Gerrard wasn't very effective in the Aimar role either because he always wants to be where the ball is.

IMHO Rafa might want to play the system as he knows it well and it would accomodate the 3 in midfield but we'll have to see if it works with the personnel we have.
