    Another young un signed up?

Liverpool trump Real Madrid for Malaga's Alcala
    tribalfooball.com - March 01, 2007

Liverpool have trumped Real Madrid for Malaga's exciting youngster Pedro Alcala.
AS says a deal for the 18 year-old centre-half could already have been signed thanks to the work of Liverpool's scout in Spain, Paco de Gracia.

Real Madrid had been following Alcala for over a year, but were baulking at paying a compensation fee to Malaga for the teen. Liverpool have since stepped in and settled on an agreement similar to what took Francisco Duran to Anfield last month.

Alcala is still playing on a youth contract and agreed to the Liverpool switch as the Premiership giants were the only suitor, including Malaga, willing to offer him pro terms.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Don't we have a few too many CB's in the reserves as it is?

I'm all for signing youngsters, but they need to play and get opportunities eventually.

It's in AS as well -
              http://www.as.com/articulo/futbol/Li...daiftb_46/Tes/

              And the crappy translation:

I can't believe you're putting Insua at left back. Surely we've got someone younger.

Come on Rafa, if they're old enough, it's legal, er, now wait I don't mean that...

All these young signings are all very well but its very very rare that they come off. Since the GH days we must have bought about 15 or so of these young players but how many have had any sort of impact. The only 1 I can think of is the much derided Djimi Traore!!!

Its not just us though. When was the last time Man U or Chelsea bought a promising youngster who really made the grade? I'm not counting Rooney or Ronaldo here as they were already pretty well known and were bought for big money. Even the much heralded Arsenal kids still have it all to prove to me. They've done well so far but doing the business game after the game is a different kettle of fish to playing weakened sides in Cup competitions.

The thing is that Arsenal have had considerable success bringin players through - Eboue, Toure, Senderos, Cliche, Djourou, Fabregas were all bought in as youngsters and have played significant roles either in the first team or as squad players. People however seem to fail to see a/ how long it took Arsenal to get to this stage, b/ quite how many players they bring in and c/ how much they spend on some of these prospects (I believe Traore and Denilson cost £8m+ between them).

People get excited about each prospect as if they were a sure thing. The very reason Rafa is bringing in so many is that he knows that isn't the case.

There are also certain people who seem to think that the progress from great prospect to first team player is automatic and that all players need only a season in the reserves before being magically transformed into Premiership ready players.
