Eat **** and die mother ****erOriginally posted by Draxdor View Posthttp://liverpoolfc.co.za/eve/forums/...3/m/4591046443
Sports Journalist and former sport's editor of the Mail on Sunday Ian Stafford was interviewed on the Simon Mayo show on the BBC discussing the Champions League draw.
A paraphrasing of what Stafford says follows below:
Mayo: If Liverpool end up playing Man U in the final, they may as well move it to somewhere like Villa Park?
Stafford: No, Hillsborough (laughs to himself)
Rest of Panel: Total silence
(long pause)
Mayo: Errr, moving on..."
The link to the audio is here:
The guests are named around 5 minutes in the Hillsborough comment is on 8 minutes 48 seconds in.
Many have already emailed Simon Mayo complaining about Stafford's comments. You can do so as well by emailing [email protected]

That's just an incredibly ignorant and stupid comment. I know some people tend to think that we go on about Hillsborough too much (Self Pity FC etc) but a comment like that about an incident where 96 people died is just disgusting. No matter who those people were...Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them.

I sent a suitably unsubtle complaint to Mayo and this is his reply, which is a load of cods. If Stafford was really referring to "old venues" then how was it a slip of the tongue? It's clear that he thought he was being amusing and it's too bad that Mayo didn't have the guts to slap him down then and there.
<<I'm sorry you were upset by a reference from Ian Stafford, an
experienced sports writer with the Mail on Sunday, to Hillsborough
during Friday's Sports Panel discussion on the Simon Mayo programme.
The panel were discussing the Champions League draw. In response to a
comment that Liverpool and Manchester United were "old, traditional
heavyweights" of English and European football, Simon suggested they
should move any possible match to Villa Park. Ian Stafford added: "Or
maybe Hillsborough". Another panellist returned the discussion to Villa
Park.
Ian Stafford is quite clear that in a live discussion, his comment was
intended at picking up on the reference to famous old venues for cup
matches, and was not referring in any way to the Hillsborough disaster.
He apologises to anyone who was offended by the comment. It was a slip
of the tongue, which he regrets.
