    Interesting news...

...about the new stadium I heard yesterday.

Apparently Statler and Waldorf (Hicks and Gillett) have sacked the Manchester-based architects Atherden Fuller Leng (AFL) and appointed another firm from London. And just to please all those of you out there that don't think 60,000 is enough, the new architects have been given a specific brief - increase the capacity to 70,000.

I've no idea how they will do that as I've always said the planning permission granted was based on 60,000 (or 61,000 to be more precise) being the maximum limit set after considering the infrastructure and the effect on the roads, etc, of an extra 16,000 fans at each game.

Anyway, I thought I'd pass on the news...
There is a light that never goes out. RIP Alan "Mally" Johnston and the 96. YNWA.

The stands will also be 8 meters away from the pitch.

Which isn't too bad, when you consider the Emirates is 15m away from the stands behind the goal ends.

I thought planning permission depended on the hieght, size, amount of shade it created etc etc of the building, not what is inside it? So if they can find a way to jam in an extra 10k people then its fine isnt it?

nice one mate. interestign if this plays out as i thought building was suppossed to start very soon. surely the increase would effect the planning permission- unless S&W have crossed a few palms with silver

                  The bigger the better.

Parry said in an interview that we could have built a lot bigger then 61000 if we had moved elsewhere but moving was not an option. He sounded like we would have no problem filling a much bigger stadium.

So if George and Tom have come up with a way to make it 70.000 in Stanley Park that must be seen as great news.

Einar, I'm not surprised you're doubting me but those of you who've 'known' me for years off here and KT will remember that I know one of the architects who worked for AFL on the original design. He doesn't work there any more, although they asked him to go back to manage the project, but he was out drinking with his ex-colleagues on Friday night.

The planning permission is based on many different factors but the effect on the local infrastructure is critical to how many seats are allowed. You can't just increase the number of fans attending by 25,000 without ensuring that the roads and public transport, etc, can cope.

I was not doubting you. You just did not name your source in the first post so I was wondering where you got this from.
