That's what I think he meant.
Cheers DS it's exactly what I meant. I think we have to move with the times and I think it's right that all stadia be safe and comfortable and be a pleasant experience.
There have been to many incidents over the years in poor conditions and we as Liverpool supporters know to well about some of those.
I think it would be insensitive of us as a group to bring this subject to the fore.
Chris it's a good question but I think we can accomodate a lot of fans without having to go back to terraces.

Yeah agreed mate, I have to say when I was on the Kop for the Barca game it was all standing as you know, but with the young lad beside me standing on the seat I was nervous that if we did score he might get knocked off.
I don't think his mother would've been to impressed

interesting perspective Chris as you're seeing it from a stewarding point of view whereas we are only seeing it from a fans point of view.

then again, weren't you the one who suggested giving out seat numbers as people give their ticket in so that people could arrive with, and sit with, their mates to encourage singing.

if so, wouldn't that solve it?

Sitting being the thing though mate, you can allocate seats but telling peole where they can and cant stand is different. If there is no seat you can shift people, no arguing. Standing, people get all defensive and then squash in simply so they dont have to move and its then the problems (could) start.

Im not against standing, just that I dont think its as safe as people try to make it out to be.

Even if it was only say...3,000 standing 'spaces' in a 60,000 capacity, with the safe-standing design (as shown above) used as it is in Germany ?

You might have the space for 3000 but people will gang together and thats what would cause problems. People will squeeze in to be with there mates. It may well work in Germany but thats Germans, they wait for the green man even when there is no cars coming. Do you think youre average English football fan is going to move from a standing area because there isnt room for him to stand safely? He and the people around him will tell the steward to **** off, he is alright now so why should he move? It would be an accident waiting to happen. I very much doubt something on the scale of Hillsborough would happen Im sure there would be an upturn in twisted ankles etc.

Its hard enough keeping the isles clear on the Kop on a European night when people are supposed to be standing in thier space. When its free for all to get the best spec, it'd be a lot worse.

The options are as i see it:

                      1. Continue to have only all seater stadiums and try to enforce the rules to get people to sit down (highly unlikely to work)

                      2. Acknowledge that during big games fans will stand up for the majority if not the whole game in areas not designed to accomodate this and also at points of interest during all games. If this is acknowledged then there has to be an argument to having a specially designed area for this to happen. My preference would be to have the ends of the ground as standing and the sides seated.

If you look at the design though, this is the crucial point...

At away games, to be honest, I've never ever felt in danger, but I have grazed my shin a few times on the seat in front and I fell over, once at Pompey. That is because people are standing in a seated area, which is not designed for standing.

With the safe-standing, a surge onto the row in front is pretty much impossible. Look closely at the design, there is a barrier preventing it happening. Talk of 'surges' and a 'crush' is wide of the mark.

Besides, apparently, the standing areas in Germany are cut off and a steward looks at your ticket before letting you in there, so I cant imagine you would ever get 4,000 trying to squeeze into standing space for 3,000.

I could have sworn there are seats in the picture that you have posted.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

4000 arent going to get into a 3000 area, the tickets/turnstiles wouldnt allow for that. A crush doesnt need to go forward though. People will push in from the sides.

I don't see what difference it would make anyway. The atmosphere isn't going to be any better for standing up is it? Safety is more important than anything else.

As I understand it, there are seats, but it is predominantly a standing area, the seats are just for safety.
